Leftover tags??
Does anyone know when the info. will be released. They go on sale on July 1, but so far not even the local ODFW office knows what's available. Anyone have any insight?

TC-
I can't find anything out either. Seems that they usually have the list by now.
Did you guys get anything in the draw last week?

Re: Leftover tags??
I didn't get squat, but I didn't really expect to. It's an extra point year for me with the big archery hunts coming up. My dad drew an E.Oregon buck tag though so that should be fun. However, driving home from Hells Canyon on Monday and turning around and driving back to Heppner on friday afternoon for his buck tag and three days isn't going to be fun at all. A lot of butt cusion time.

This is an area we have as our third choice for many yeays. Which means we hunt it every other year. Lot's of area to hunt. It took us several years to figure it out. The one thing I don't like is how many hunters are in the area. Kinda like hunt in the west side of the moumtains. One of the thing to consider is once the elk start moving where do they go to hide. It aint up hill! Try and hunt below the crowds.
Good luck and be safe.

Re: Leftover tags??
Small Fry,
Sounds like you have been pretty succesful in the Mt. Emily unit. I hear that's a pretty tough unit with all the hunters. Would you be willing to give your secret to success? Other than hunt below the other hunters on private land down by the agricultural fields. It can't possibly be that easy. Hunter success in this unit is very low. Do you use a spotter or send anyone brush busting down the canyons?

Re: Leftover tags??
Kodiakfisher easy big guy.
I hope I didn't mislead anyone. This area by no means is an easy area to hunt. It dose get a lot of traffic. You do need to get off the road and down or up into the thick stuff. But like anything else if you do it often enough your success rate will increase. I personaly have not filed my tag in this unit. Maybe this year. But every year we hunt thia area I help pack at least one elk out of some un- godly area. My comment on hunting below the crowds is valid. If you can find an area that is open to the public. Sorry if I mislead anyone.

Re: Leftover tags??
To add to what Small Fry has already said, He is one hell of a pack mule. He has had the oppurtunity to see some rugged country while packing out an Elk to his credit he very rarely complains unless you have have to pack one out Sunday afternoon from the high hills and then everyone finds something to complain about.
Pack Mule that was appropriate slow steady and occasionaly stubborn.
One hint I will give is the northern section reportadly holds great numbers of elk. Second if you look at a canyon and say there is no way in $%* I'm packin an elk out of that. Go down there and scare the elk to me would you please. Worked like a charm the first year. I have named him elephant man because I heard him a good 30 min before I could see him and he was chasing the elk laying at my feet. Lucky for him I shot that spike or he would've never caught up to it.
Just for clarification elephant man isn't small fry. He is pretty darn quite for a big guy.
