Please accept my comments in the spirit it is made, an honest attempt to give you food for thought. I see from your post you are perhaps a younger man. Bluing is like anything else, you get what you pay for. That said, sometimes you pay for what you expect to be good work and find you got the shaft. The prep work for a good job should not leave buff marks, scratches etc. I have seen some guns ruined and have had one ruined myself when it was sent out to a new bluer from the stockmaker. Most will be hot dipped and are very shinney or mirror like. There are some guys in Hillsboro at the Powderhorn that have perfected a copy of what most manufactures use and the gun will look as it might have new. There is a shop in Vancouver Wa. that does rust bluing and it is as good as the finest restorations in this country. I don't have their name at hand at the moment but I can put you in touch with someone that can tell you who the are if thats what you want. Rust bluing is very very spendy and if its a hunting gun for field use I would not recommend the latter. As always, it might be worth your time to ask for a couple of samples of the work the prospective craftman has done. Good Luck and welcome as a new member.

Default Where to have my guns blued?

I need to get my guns blued before next season and was wondering if anyone knew a good place. I live in Clackamas and would like it to be nearby.
Thanks for the help.

I have had two rifles and two shotguns "Z" plated. It is a teflon based coating. I had Don Norris Gunsmithing do it. Don can be reached at 503.626.2363. I can take my Z plated shotgun to my place in Tillamook, hunt ducks all day, dunk the gun in the bay and 8 hours later it still does not have any rust on it. GREAT stuff.

I had a buddy who didnt like the worn down spot in the blueing where the barrel rode in the gun rack. He re-blued the gun himself I know he bought a kit and did it. Gun looks fine to me shoots as good as it ever did

I know he had to remove the old blue before putting on the new. He took a rag and started to wipe down the spot with the blue remover, and a drip ran all the way down the barrel to the stock taking a strip of blueing with it He told me the blue remover works really well (kind of like the TarnX commercials) He ended up redoing the whole gun when he wanted to patch a little spot.

Al's gun shop in verboort sends his guns into portland somewhere and has them hot blued. Thats the best way to have it done and its the only way to get them to look like new. Cold blueing is a inconsistant method which leaves most consumers disappointed. Find someone who can hot blue your weapon. they will stip it of oil and reblue it close to new.
