Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
My brother drew a bighorn tag for the East Beattys Butte unit. Neither one of us has ever hunted that unit and know absolutely nothing about it. Has anyone hunted this unit before or know of anyone who has guided this unit before? He has a friend who has guided all over but never anywhere near that unit. Should he go with him or try to find a local guide? Any information or advise would be very helpful.

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
The hard part is already done, he drew the tag! If he has time to scout this summer, and is self-sufficient he shouldn't need to hire a guide. But that's his choice.
You'll find most of those sheep in the Pueblo Mtns, but they do range off the west slope out into the hills and buttes.
Buy some good BLM maps of the area. There aren't a whole lot in the way of roads, most are old mining roads winding thru the boulders.
It's awesome country, hope he get's a ram!

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
Sliverpicker is right...probably don't need a guide if you can get over there a time or two to scout. Stop at the Lakeview BLM office and talk to the wildlife guy...and get the lowdown on road conditions, etc. Also the ODFW people there will be able to aim you in the right direction. My only advice is to consider carrying two spare tires...even if your rig has brand new shoes...those roads are rocky and rugged and its a long ways  to Les Schwab from the Rincon valley.
Hope you guys get a Ram...but whether you do or not, you will see some really awesome country that is seldom visited.

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
cjk,
Congratrs to your brother!
I drew that tag two years ago. I did a lot of scouting and killed a nice ram on the second day.
East Beattys is one of the more difficult sheep units. It is huge country but there are rams in a bunch of places. You will not be disappointed!
I would be more than happy to share what I know about the unit. Those tags are priceless and I hope your brother makes the most of his.
It's not like I can ever sheep hunt there again. :depressed: :depressed:

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
I put in for a tag every year and last year a buddy got a tag we went and got a ram after a days hunting. after we got the ram back from the butcher I cooked some on the grill then on the stove then in the oven and all I can say is the best way to eat them is cook in a heavy cast iron skillet and when fully cooked throw it in the trash because the dog wont eat it and then chew on the pan . I wont be putting in for them again, sombody else can have my tag.

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
Gottafish,I have been researching my tag by contacting previous successfull Bighorn hunters and everyone of them has told me how good eating they are.I'm holding out hope in addition to a great hunt,I get some good meals.I'm sure properly prepared I won't be dissapointed.First I must complete the task of the hunt.

Re: Bighorn Sheep Tag, East Beatys Butte
Hello,
I drew the tag two years ago. What a hunt. The meat is great.
I will be happy to assit you in preperatio if needed. The biggest thing is the physical aspect of going after these bruts.
I have photos of two dozen rams on hill sides.
Do lots of scouting and usually they wil be in the area you find them now and later as long as they are not spooked. But mostly they are a courious animal.
Good Luck and lots of long distance shooting practice.
