Default .338 win.mag firepower

Just bought a new elk gun, a model 70 LH .338 win.mag. Boy they are hard to find. Just trying to find out what's the best bullet, grain, and brand to shoot. I don't reload so I just buy factory load. Thankyou for the info.

I believe the best bullet weight is 250 Gr. There are premium bullets such as Noslers available from ammo manufacturers. I reload, and shoot Speer Grand Slams. Congratulations on the purchase of a very fine weapon. The .338 has been a hands down favorite of mine for many years. It served me very well in Alaska, and is close to perfect for Elk as well. The recoil is manageable, especially when you think about all that down range bullet energy.

IMO the 225gr Accubond is tough to beat.

Mine liked 225 Partitions - would shot under 3/4" and that was using the seconds. The next was Elkhorn Bullets from Medford - one hole groups with those in 225 - rebated boat tail.

Greenbridge....you have chosen a very good way of putting a Elk to sleep real quickly. as long as you can shoot well and your gun fits you good. I stick by my loads I have used over the many years I have hunted, they have never failed me so why should I change, I shoot a 340 Weatherby, which is almost the same thing and for Elk I have done real good with the 210 Nosler Partition. I even shot a sage rat with it once at 50 yards, oh well, boys will be boys. Have fun with your new rifle my friend...

Congrats on the new gun! Mine likes 225 grain partitions. It shot the 250 grains "ok", but I can get 1/2 inch groups with the 225's.

It sounds like I have to try different grains of bullets and see which one my gun likes best. Thanks for the info.
