Record Bear in Alaska
A friend of mine just e-mailed me a story and pictures of a record Grizzly that was killed by a fish and game warden while dear hunting in Alaska. This bear killed two people, one a hiker that was included in the pictures after the bear got finished with him. I won't post this picture. I will try to post the picture of the bear. It measured 14ft. high and weighed over 1600 lbs. Apparently the hiker tried to kill it with a 38 cal. as they found 4 slugs in the bear along with the slugs from the warden's 7mm. They will display the bear in the Anchorage airport. If you are hunting or fishing in Alaska wilderness make sure you are packing a big enough gun. Has anyone else heard this story? I am not sure when or where it happened.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
Come on Rags, show us the pictures. I think I have seen the pictures. Doesn't one of them show an arm after it had been removed from the bear?
How about the man on the Kalama that was jumped by the cougar? That was much more likely to happen so one of us.
What is the worst think that has happened to you with animals?
I have been bitten by dogs and cats, Thrown by horses and run over by a freight train playing flag football. Oh yeah, hit in the head with a fastball back in school. The pitcher was an animal.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
The true story is in Cabelas Big Game Hunting magazine they put out. That bear would have scored 150th if it had been entered in the books.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
A good friend of mine lives in Anchorage. He said the locals get a kick out people who think a handgun of any sort will stop an enraged grizzly or brown bear. They say take a .44, but leave one in the chamber for yourself! When he goes backpacking or fishing there is nothing less than a shotgun with slugs, 00 buck or a .338, or a Howitzer.
John...how have things been? Golfing or fishing? Tell the boys hi.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
i think Smith & Wessons 500 magnum would do the job  Most Powerful Production Revolver in the World Today
Massive 500 S&W Magnum® Cartridge 2600 ft/lb. Muzzle Energy
A Hunting Handgun For Any Game Animal Walking
and the 12ga 3" slug is olny 2331 ft/lb of muzzle energy is what remingtons ballistics chart says ,but i would rather have my 300 Ultra Mag

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
I have seen the picture of the remains of a man after the "attack". If this indeed is a real picture, and I think it is, you DO NOT want to see it.
I have seen almost everything in my years as a EMT and actually was appalled at the image in this photo. If it happened, I hope the victim died of fright immediately. If not...I don't want to think about it.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
You fellows are right those pictures and bear stories have been going around the internet for several years now and the bear keeps getting bigger along with the stories. No matter how you aproach it, it is a big bear though I won't want him chomping on my hide.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
Hi Gary,
Things are going great. Been doing a lot of fishing and just a little golfing. John and his wife just had their fourth child. Now they have three boys and a new girl. Living in Ft. Worth. Matt is engaged and still at Tualatin Country Club as a golf pro. Hope to see you on the river.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
When I lived in Alaska I always carried a weapon when out in the woods. When I was just hiking in an area where I would probably not see a bear I carried a Desert Eagle .44. If I was in an area where I knew that I would see a bear, like fishing for salmon, I carried a shot gun with the plug removed and the magazine filled with slugs. The round in the chamber was 00 buck shot. I also at the advice of the locals I laced jingle bells into my boot laces when I was just out for a hike. The thought was if they hear you coming they will avoid you. Seemed to work. The only bears I ever saw were when I was fishing....

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
Back in the late 80s or so I read an official USFS research publication where they analyzed various weapons to determine what forest service employees should carry while working in bear country in SE Alaska.
They tested the .375, .338, .458, .30-06...and maybe a couple other rifles...and a 12-gauge pump shotgun with rifled slugs.
While most of the rifles tested had superior ballistics and energy, the conclusion of the study was that for the AVERAGE person (including women employees) the 12-ga pump gun w/slugs was the way to go. Many people cannot accurately shoot the big rifles...they flinch...and getting off 2nd or 3rd shots with bolt actions is slower than with a pump shotgun.

Re: Record Bear in Alaska
The old joke in AK was you could tell brown bear scat from black bear by the little jingle bells in the brown bear scat.
