Default Hunting Info Resources

This year will be something new for me on two fronts. My first hunt out east, and my first antelope hunt (with a muzzleloader no less.) I only have 2.5 months to get ready, so I have been getting things together and thought I would share a few resources that may help you, too.

www.mytopo.com
This site is one I saw in a recent issue of Outdoor Life. It is actually a subscription service that allows you to manage topo and airial photos online. You can also upload/download GPS waypoints and "draw" on your maps. You can get a look at the topos and airial photos for free, but don't get any of the other cool features.

www.topozone.com
Just topos, in different scales. You can click and get coordinates for manually entering in waypoints into your GPS.

GI Joes Delta Park
They have a copy of Topo USA or one of the other mapping software programs running in the store. (next to the coffe shop). You can browse and print maps ($7.95 each) on waterproof paper in full color with relief shading. Pretty cool if you know what 7.5 minute map you want.

The BLM is a great source for maps. I ordered 4 today.

You can contact the regional office for you hunt unit by looking here...
http://www.or.blm.gov/recreation.htm
Click on the area of the map you are hunting in and you will get the regional office number and what maps are available. I got National Forest map, BLM map and transportation maps. These include private/public property lines.

If you have any other sources or tips, post up.

Maybe we can also start another thread for Hunt Unit information. Not necessarily secret spots, just some helpful tips to get people moving in the right direction.

Just think some of us are less than two months from opening day!

If you can get there during the week go check out Nature of the Northwest in Portland. It's a state office so the hours suck but they have BLM, state forest service, national forest service, topos, you name it. The folks are pretty knowledgeable and helpful (I think they have some volenteers that aren't quite as up to speed). You can also order online or phone if you know what you want.

Good luck
