saying hello and looking for help
Greetings fisherfolk!! I'm new to ifish and new to fishing the columbia, the family and I are transplants from central oregon, I went salmon fishing with my brother for my first time this spring out of Goble and caught my first salmon and now I've got the fever! Since then I bought an alumaweld intruder so that I did'nt have to call my brother every weekend to ask him where we were going fishing,(not that I had to twist his arm).My brother and I are going to put in at westport, just upriver from wauna this saturday and I'm wondering if anyone can give me any info about that area? Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated by this salmon rookie :sh rug:

Welcome aboard. Sorry, I got no info to offer up where you're talkin'. Should be plenty of insight on other threads if you dig around a bit, though. Maybe try an archive search, too.

Sorry, Bartman, I can't help you with your question. However, keep the faith - there are probably others that can and will. Or, as has been suggested, do a search. In any event, I want to welcome you to Ifish.

Re: saying hello and looking for help
Why go that far? There are, by all reports here on Ifish, plenty of fish right there in St.Helens. Plenty of good spots not far from where you fished at Goble, both upstream and down. Put in at Rainier, head over to the Longview/ mouth of the cowlitz, join the outside end of a line, and do what everybody else does - Alvin on a 5 foot leader with a five foot sinker dropper w/ 4 to 10 ounces. Go in at Kalama, head upstream, join a line. Put in at whatever the ramp is at the mouth of the Willamette channel (I forget what it's name is), and head out into the Columbia, and look for boats. I have never fished out of Westport, but if I did, I'd look for the boats and note which way they go, and what they do. In salmon fishing, lots of people know the popular spots. Look for the pack of boats, starting fishing there, and watch what the people who are there before you are doing. Likely it's either trolling herring behind divers, or anchor fishing wobblers. If you have that gear, you should have a good shot at things.
To anchor, make sure you have the proper gear, 200+ feet of rope, rocker anchor, and buoy, or you'll be frustrated.
Good luck. I wish I weren't booked on work and family outings until after Labor Day. :depressed:

Re: saying hello and looking for help
Thanks to all for the warm welcome and it does look like there is a change of plans, I work in columbia city at the Dixieline lumber dock and over the last couple days I've seen a huge increase in boats anchored on the river in that area, so the fishing has got to be better than last saturday when we fished that area and only saw one fish to the boat. so since it sounds like the fish are coming to me the least I can do is catch them
