Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Anyone getting excited about the upcoming hunting season? Ready to hear whether or not you'll get to hunt your favorite "honey hole?"
Hopefully I'll pull my tag draws. Haven't pulled an antelope tag since 1995, and still waiting to draw my first cow elk tag. I guess most of all I am excited to hear if I get to hunt again for Deer in the Desolation Unit. Fell in love with the area the last 2 years bagging a nice 3x4 and 4x4 last year. Good luck to you all, may your bullet shoot straight and bring meat to your camp!

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Now. now, gentlemen. "Patience is a virtue." Remember ODFW has had the results sometimes even earlier then the date they tell you. Keep checking back periodically on their website. Never know ? I Hope I draw that cow elk tag! Imagine if you drew all the tags you put in for ? May have to just quit work all together and hunt. Good Luck to all !

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Hey Sturgeonater,
I think my dad and I are going to start putting in for Desolation for both Deer and Elk next year. We hunted Ukiah right next to the northern part of Desolation last year and where we saw it was all pretty thick. Is most of the Unit like this or is there some more open country for Deer? I am not expecting you to give away your spot. Any info on what the unit is like would be much appreciated. BTW don't know if you fish up this way at all, but I fish about 5 days a week in the mid-columbia and tribs and would be happy to swap fishing info for hunting info.
Thanks
Rick

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Since moving to Washington, I look forward to 'results day', but it quickly overshadowed by a ever increasing bank account that has to fund out of state trips. My wife almost killed me over last years unsuccessful $300+ elk tag. I only put in for 3 hunts (muzzleloader deer, antelope and antlerless deer) this year and point savered my elk hunt. If history repeats itself, I will only get my muzzleloader deer tag. If so, I am going to have to cut some lawns this summer.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
ChromeBright...
Desolation Unit is a fantastic unit for deer...Last year we spotted well over 400 deer in 4-5 days of hunting. I've shot my buck both years on the opener with a nice 3x4 and 4x4. Sure is nice to see groups of deer compared to the one or two at a time you see on the West side. Can't say alot about the elk as I have yet to see one in 2 years of hunting, but I have friends who have done real well there.
Lots of open country down in the lower elevations as well as more rugged country up high. Shoot me an e-mail at: tgieber@msn.com and I'll share some good spots with ya.
What do you fish for on the Columbia? Sturgeon or salmon? I'd love to learn more about fishing for salmon as they've restricted us so darn much on the sturgeon. Had to settle for catch and release this weekend in the Willamette mixed in with some shad fury. Take care!

Only thing I drew was a Willamette hair tag. My son struck out in all his apps.
Good luck! sliverpicker

How did you find out already? I just tried to check the dfw website and it said they don't have my license # yet so I just guess that they don't have the results posted yet?

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Has anyone looked at their preference point page today? Is this supposed to reflect this year's results or is this still a reflection of the status prior to the draw? Based on my drawing success (or lack there of), it could go either way.
Getting closer to a couple of great hunts. Only about 5 more years

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Drew no tags this year, not even my West Biggs Buck Tag. Ya know, I wish people would read that this a 98% private land hunt and if they don't know anybody, they should not apply! Your eaten up my tags, darnit! I see so many people road hunting every year in this Unit, and yes, It is Illegal if you don't have permission. Oh well, I'll get it next year, guess it's black tail hunting would some of my good friends for this year.

Holy smokes! I drew my big bull tag. Now that I have been practicing with my bow all spring. I mostly thought this would end up as a point saver type deal. got one doe tag and no ukiah buck :depressed: .

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Tough year for tags. Got my third choice for elk Spike only. But I got the doe tag I applied for.
Of course I only applied for it because it over lapped with my first choice for elk.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Wak...I got the East Fort Rock/Silver Lake hunt. Sept 6-14.
This will be my first (c)antelope hunt so I have a bunch of work to do in the next two and a half months.  Not to mention dialing in the smoke pole for a better trajectory.
I am thinking of picking up a 45 cal just for this hunt.
How about you, is your antelope tag rifle or muzzleloader? What unit?

Lured
I drew the Catlow muzzleloader. I have a 54 cal that I am still getting used to. I thought about going with a 45 cal also, but I am going to see what I can do with the 54 cal first. I think my tag is for the same time. It is in the middle of archery season, so I think I will bring along my bow just in case there are any mulies around.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Wak...I have been shooting a 54 cal for the last 4 years for deer and elk and I love it. Unfortunately I am not anticipating getting the 10-75 yard shots I have had on deer and elk.
My primary interest is increasing the distance while giving a little on downrange energy. I can comfortably hit a 8" target at 100 yards with my 54. But it can be a challenge to get the round to carry beyond that without dropping like a rock. The flip side is you sight in for 125 yards and you are 5" high at 40.
That's part of why I love muzzleloader hunting.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Unlike Muleybuck, I only have time for one big hunting trip a year. This year it is going to be Owyhee, so I amlooking forward to that hunt. Gonna be a great time. I am actually starting to really miss Blacktail hunting. Next year I will put a lot more time into it.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
No Luck Here on the preferance point system.
I got a little upset about the whole draw system today. A coworker of mine some how managed to draw 2 100 series tags ( high cascade deer tag 100 series and a ochecoo buck deer tag 100 series hunt. According to the hunting regulations you are only allowed 1 tag for a 100 series hunt the way I read it. I believe that their is something wrong with the whole draw system. and the way the odwf does things. My father has drawn a upper decheust tag the last 3 yaers with no prferance points.
I am going to call odwf and ask them a bout how 1 person can have two 100 series tag andhow this thing works.
7 points antelope no draw
5 points elk no draw
1 point anteerless deer no draw
1 point controlledd buck no draw
additional deer no draw
Any one out their want to put in together next year I seem to be real lucky HA HA HA HA

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
MuleyBuck,
West Biggs is only 85% private and there is some great hunting on the other 15%, but it is not for the lazy. Just because you have some private land to hunt on don't expect any simpathy here. I work my tail off in those canyons. About the farthest thing from road hunting as possible.
I too did not draw it this year, but I believe they reduced the tags a little before the draw.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Hey Chromebright, sorry to here you did not draw your tag either. I'm not refering to the proper hunter, I'm refering to all the road hunters I see every year, and no, there is no access to public land from where I see them. I bust my ass every year there too, just doing a little steam off. I'm from that area, and have hunted the unit all my life. I've taken plenty of quality bucks from there. Just sucks when you cannot hunt with some of your best friends every year like it should be.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
I drew a Saddle Mt. anterless deer tag for the 3 year in a row!!!So how does this work? There are supposed to be fewer tags available due to decreased deer numbers. I know I don't have to shoot a doe or spike but question my luck on this draw. I didn't draw the cow elk hunt I wanted, but as second choice can hunt saddle mt. #2. Still have all my elk preference pts.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Don't think that I understand this draw thing anymore. All we pulled was the antlerless tag this year. How many points does it take to pull the other tags.
8 now 9 points for elk
7 now 8 points for antelope
3 now 4 points for buck
No spring bear tags this year either what is going on with this draw system?

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
You guys need to look at the preference point vs. draw success statistics put out by ODFW. It's easy to draw every year with no points if you put in for certain units where they let just about every person who applies hunt (low quality areas in my opinion). If you aren't drawing with lots of preference points, it's because you put in for a highly competative area. I drew Round Mtn. antlerless and Hepner Buck with no points because just about everyone who puts in draws. These might not be great areas to hunt, but I just wanted to get out of the house. I would have had 0 chance of drawing in about 85% of the other units.
As far as one guy getting two 100 series hunts, I have no idea.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
Well, the results are in and lady luck finally caught up with me in the Desolation Unit. Was unsuccessful for both Desolation and Upper Deschutes (2nd choice). Guess I can't complain as I've pulled a Desolation tag the past 2 years in a row...Looks like I'll hunt the coast for blacktail ghosts
I did however pull my first cow elk tag in the Melrose Plus unit. Hunting season in that unit is from Aug 1 - March 31. I think there will be elk in the freezer this year! Also got a doe/spike tag for the Tioga Unit.
Good luck to all!

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
The ODFW was rather nice to me this year finally. I got Murders Creek for bucks and a McKenzie doe tag. Missed out on the Ukiah elk hunt but 2/3 isn't bad.

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
I got lucky for the first time in this points system. After waiting 3 years to get a Murderers Ck. tag last year, I draw a Desolation with no points this year. On top of that, I also draw a doe after drawing one last year with 1 point. Guess someone was watching over me this year.
On the flip side, I now have 10 Points for Pronghorn and 3 for Elk. Funny how what I expected was exactly the opposite of what I got.....

Re: Anyone Excited About Controlled Hunt Draw?
I am so set.
1 point got me a Pine Creek 1st season bull elk tag.
2 points got me a Beattes Butte mule deer buck tag.
0 points got me an additional Willamette deer tag.
Still working on that Antlope and Sheep, but I'd say the freezer will be full again.
