Default Newbie story and report

Long time lurker, first time poster.

In deference to Ampersats recent post (thus showing my respect to my Ifish “elders”) about doing away with the customary introduction tale, I’ve elected to post my introduction story in the form of a recent fishing report.

Monday was my birthday and a holiday for me so I decided what better way to spend it than to drag my 8 month pregnant wife (she’s determined to catch a steelhead on a fly) and 12 year old daughter fishing over on the Wilson. The day started drizzly but had sun-breaks by noon and the water looked great (5.5 ft or so and a nice green). Things started slow and early on I was mostly refreshing my daughter on casting a bobber and jig and how to take the tail off a sand shrimp and put it on the jig. I missed one bobber down at that first stop then moved to a regular spot that has produced fish for myself or my buddy (aka. Umpqua special). We fished it for about half an hour tossing jigs, bare and with shrimp, tube jigs, and flies, then I decided to try a Powerbait worm. I had success on one of these worms in the same hole last year. On about the fifth cast I get a bobber down and a solid hook-up. The fish fought like a salmon and took me down stream a ways through some heavy white water (with a pregnant wife and kid with a camera in chase) but eventually I got it into a calm, shallow spot where I could tail it. It turned out to be the biggest steelhead I’ve landed and just a beautiful fish. This wild buck was 37" and solid. I’m guessing, based on other posts on Ifish and discussion, it to be around 17 pounds. It took a 4" bubblegum Powerbait worm under a sliding bobber with an inline weight and pink 1/0 Gami hook. Before I get read the Riot-Act, it was handled and photographed quickly, revived and swam away strong. In my haste though I didn’t get a girth measurement, which would have been nice to calculate a weight.

I hope this was a somewhat informative introduction story/report and thanks for all the information I’ve gleaned while lurking on Ifish. I’ve met several friendly Ifishers in my travels and I’m looking forward to trying to contribute to this forum.

David

I have a nice photo but unfortunately I haven't figured out how to get my picture to upload properly so I can't show you the fish at this time.
