Need a .243 bolt action rifle
I've been shopping for a .243 caliber bolt action rifle, either in Ruger or Browning. Any recommendations? Where is a good place to buy used a rifle?

Trophy,
I've got a sweet Obendorf Mauser 3000 in .243 you might want to look at. It's not a military make-over, but rather based on the Heym action.
Pics are here

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
My daughter enlisted my help when she was looking for a rifle for her boyfriend at christmas. We ended up getting the ruger S.S. w/the new composite stock which is a real nice gun when comparing it to a similar remington. The rem. action was a horrid, sloppy, grinding action, while the ruger was much better fitted and fairly smooth. But neither gun compared with the Browning Micro .243, a VERY SWEET Rifle!!! If I were buying for myself, hands down, the Browning, but for a boyfriend? The ruger suffices. I compared these at G.I.Joes during the christmas 20% off sale. The Browning was about $75 more than the Ruger and the Ruger was about $25 more than the Rem.

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
skein,
tell me more about the rifle...age, usage, weight, etc...
I'm looking for something light and newer...even consider Rem 700 or Winchester Model 70. Thanks!

Trophy,
...age, usage, weight, etc...
Oh, man, that's like trying to describe my wife. Uh...well, what I mean is...uh...er...
What we need to do is meet up somewhere and let you run a few rounds through it. I don't know of any place between here and there, but we could go out to the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club just off I-5 at the Hwy 34 (Corvallis) interchange, and you could try it there. If you know a place, I'd be willing to bring it up.
It's very clean, with one (very) small ding on the comb. It's light, but the real proof is in the balance and handling. It just fits.
The trigger is also a strong point on these rifles, being infinitely adjustable and very crisp. And the action? It is like silk - they didn't know it was okay to build them any other way.
I don't have a scope on it right now, but I still have the scope that came with it, so maybe I'll put that back on and you can see what you think.
Anyway, if you're interested let's get together.

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv"> I feel like I walked right into that one!
Before I get in my car and drive over an hour, I'd like to know as much as possible to avoid wasting time, although it's tempting to go shoot that rifle. BTW, are you a member of that club? or how much is it gonna cost to shoot there?

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
Trophy,
Yes, I'm a member so there is no problem getting in and shooting. But if you've got a place up there to shoot, I can come your way. It's a pretty good ride either way, but there's nothing like getting the rifle in your hands and shooting it.
...And don't feel pressured. It's a very nice little rifle, but it's certainly not the only option out there. I just think this one may work pretty well for you.

Don't leave out the Browning BLR lever action in .243. A sweet gun too!

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
Skein,
The best place to buy a used rifle is from me! Mint condition Ruger M77RS (sights) in .243. Also takes a normal scope mount. I love M77's (I also have a .300 Win Mag). The only reason I am selling is my son is using this and I need to get him a .270 and it will definitely be an M77. Contact me at biederboat@qwest.net.
Thanks,
Biederboat

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
If you can find one used, I recommend the Remington 700 stainless synthetic with (or without) the detatchable box magazine. Remington stopped making it a few years ago in .243, about the time I wanted to purchase one and I can't find one anywhere. I second the recommendation for the Rugers though. I've never owned one that didn't shoot sub 1" groups right out of the box.

Re: Need a .243 bolt action rifle
Hey, Biederboat, I got a real kick out of that one.
Okay, okay, when I buy another .243 I'll buy it from you.
