Eastbound Archery Heads Up
For those of us headed east Friday night to chase critters with sharp sticks,
This weekend is the Hood to Coast run.
If you go over Mt Hood, be prepared to be stopped several times, have a mass amount of runners and shuttle vans all over the road.
Quite frankly its a mess with them getting off the hill while I am going against them.
If I didnt want to pick up my trail cam along the way, I would go up the gorge, and cut south at Biggs to avoid the mess.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
I'm headed to the back side of Hood, probably go to Hood River and in from the backside.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
I got caught in that mess a couple of years ago.
It took me a couple of hours to go from Welches to the top.
If possible, I would bypass.

Same advice goes for those hunting Saddle Mtn Unit, except the roads are narrower with more curves.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
Oh boy Guess who gets to drive through that mess this weekend to go to work? If I run over one of those idiots, I want this post as a legal notice of my objection to taking my primary road way from its intented use and placing me and my estate in jeopardy.

Thats for sure!! I have had to wait in a line of cars for over an hour in one spot heading up to hunt Saddle Mt. It can definately get frustrating on opening day

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
I thought I would get smart one year and run against the grain on Apriary road going to work. The logic was that, that lane would be open. What I didn't know was the check point a couple of miles from Hyw. 47, there was a chip truck stuck because he was afraid to move because there were so many runners streaming down both sides of his vehicle. The other lane was full of mini-vans. Luckily I had a passenger and he had to physically get ahead of the chip truck and block the vans so I could drive around the chip truck. What a zoo! I really don't know how we can allow the take over of a public resource for a for profit enterprise like this.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
I'm not able to head east until Saturday afternoon due to a funeral I need to attend. Do you think the roads will be clear by then or will the race be staged such that it will still be conjested. Thanks in advance.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
One of their organizers drove down my dead end road last weekend asking where Camp Wilkerson was. He was lost by at least 15 miles. The organizer said that some of the locals don't like their race. I told him that none of the locals liked their race.
According to the organizer, in the past locals have:
-thrown nails on the road at their checkpoints
-dressed up in hockey masks and jumped out of the bushes to scare runners
-spread cow manure in the road (they will be staking out the road this year to catch that person in the act)
-and in Birkenfeld, carry their couches out to the side of the highway along with a good supply of beer. After a while, they see who can p*ss the farthest across the road as the joggers are going by.
I don't know if any of these are true, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were.

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
Well, I battled the mighty walkers on the way home, for the most part it wasn't too bad. I wish the van drivers would realize if they would crowd over to the fog line, then I could continue to drive down the center line and let their walkers stay on the fog line in my lane. But, city drivers don't seem to get it! What really frosts me is the walkers who think they can walk two or three abreast in MY lane. Those get the horn!
Sure not looking forward to the drive in the morning, then its walkers and runners! Adds another 1/2 hour to a 14 hour day. Thanks Hood to Coast!

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
I drove into Sandy about 6pm to pick up a pizza, they had the town all tangled up! There's still a bunch of runners headed your way!

Re: Eastbound Archery Heads Up
Thank goodness I don't live along the route, I would probably have to take a day off of work because of all the noise and hubbub. I'm truly surprised that some old geezer hasn't gone postal. It seems there are two camps out our way, those who embrace it and those who stew about it. Gee, if I didn't have to drive through it I would be fine, but I don't see how it is fair to place people at risk when they are lawfully trying to get somewhere on our public roads.
I met some poor soul towing a long camp trailer behind his pickup going with the grain tonight. I bet he was having some real pucker moments.
What gets me was at Natal they have some guy with a slow sign in the middle of the road and then a bunch of cones taking up a third of my lane, next to some porta-potties. Things are tight enough without that horse manure!
