Re: Skunk problems.....
Don't chase them down and kill them with a shovel and don't ask me how I know this.
We have a live trap with sheetmetal sides that works well for catching them, I think the ODF&W has loaners.
I try to release them in the upscale part of town

Re: Skunk problems.....
If your not in the city a live trap is the best. I get one about every 2 weeks. They really yanked my chain when they dug into my pheasant pen and ate one of my roosters. I have gotten to where I will just pick up the trap and carry it to the corner of the property that is down wind of the house. Slip the barrel of a 22 inside the wire. When they come over to sniff it they get the "hot lead injection" Only about 1 or 2 in 10 will go off Just this past sunday morning I am in the shower when my boy comes running in saying we got another one. He wanted to deliver the "bad news" to this one but I told him to wait until I was out there. I get dressed and wander out to find a dead skunk in the trap. My son being only 8 doesn't have access to the guns just yet. So I track him down to get the story. "I just pumped the bb gun 10 or 12 pumps and put the barrel in the cage like you do. When it came over and sniffed it I got it right in the head"!!! Well other than disobeying and waiting for me, heck what could I say??? I guess he will get his lesson when his time comes. Now I wouldn't suggest a bb gun but if your in the city, believe me it really does work. My choice has always been a hollow point 22.

Re: Skunk problems.....
You can get "CB" shells for the 22 if you live in the city. They make very little noise and work just fine at close range.

Re: Skunk problems.....
Ahaaa!!! Musta been Keta striking again! I live in a 3rd floor apartment in big old downtown Carlton, and at about 3 AM a couple mornings ago I woke up to the incredible stench of a skunk!  The whole apt reeked! This is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened this summer. I don`t have air conditioning so keep the windows open 24 hrs a day during the summer. Now I know who is causing this! Thanx Keta! Although I`m not so sure my area is considered the "upscale part of town" Ff

Re: Skunk problems.....
If they are under the house place moth balls around the entrances. This should scare them away.
good luck

Re: Skunk problems.....
I used to raise pheasants as well. The skunks love em. I would use the live traps covered except for the opening. Wet cat food worked well and only occasionally caught a cat. When I'd catch one, I'd just cover the end with a blanket, pack them out to the field and dispatch with a 22. They almost never sprayed. Almost!! I did kill a few with shotguns, but that was ugly. Good luck, they are tenacious little boogers. Lawdog

Re: Skunk problems.....
Not that I know of! Although they try real hard! What with all the new wine tasting rooms/bars/art galleries and other yuppy type stuff that goes along with them! OOps! hope I didn`t tread on any toes using that politically incorrect slang! At least it`s a quiet little place despite the early AM cat VS skunk encounters. Ff

Re: Skunk problems.....
Now Kyle lives in a very upbeat town! Lafayette is growing like a wild weed! New subdivisions going up all the time! You might consider shipping your nightly catches there instead of Carlton!?

Re: Skunk problems.....
I have three cats (all fixed) and a bunch of local abandoned strays that I feed and water every morning before going to work.
Living in the farmland around Jefferson, and with the back door of the garage (where the grub is) left open, I've found skunks, possums, racoons, and even a family of nutria showing up to dine with the cats. Though not exactly a "community type meal", there's a definite pecking order, everybody gets their fill eventually, between snarls and huffing.
None of these animals have caused me any problems, and not having any close, next door neighbors, will cause them any either.
The way I see it, we've infringed on their territory, and they're trying to survive the best way they can, just like you and I. All of God's creatures have this instinct.
Our own creation, the autombile, is the great equalizer anyway.

Re: Skunk problems.....
We shot many skunks on our farm growing up but, I'm not comfortable killing them anymore. My dad used to say "don't kill Gods little creatures for no reason" and I would respond "but, they are SKUNKS!" He would respond with "they have a place here too." I guess I'm becoming like my pop. I'm not in a rural area anymore so I don't have to worry about it as much but my family still does. My brother uses a live trap and then transports them out into the delta to release but he's been sprayed a few times. I like the trap Moldy mentioned but, I definitely don't like the idea of submersing them in water. I'll have to get one for my bro so he can capture and transport them in that to release.
