I've had some good experiences with their gear. Many items are available from other sources at comparable prices, but their introductory outfits are very well priced and good quality. I bought my dad a 5 weight graphite rod, reel and DT line with 6 leaders for $100. The rod is an LLBean brand, but probably produced by someone like Cortland. I was surprised at how well it cast.

You can find anything that LL Bean offers cheaper locally!
I hardly buy anything mail order since I can usually find it in one of the local shops

LL Bean has a great reputation but----I like touching it,feeling it, wiggling it, eyeballing it,,,,hard to do from a catalogue. I buy local unless I know exactly what I want.

I bought a 5wt guide model rod from them about 4yrs ago and love it. I think I paid 200 or 250 for it. It is a beautiful rod and handles very well. I took it to the fly shop on the eastside(can't remember the name right now) where I bought my Ross reel because the owners son (Jack I think?) wanted to check it out. He had never played with an LL Bean rod before. We ended up "field testing" it out in the parking lot and put it up against similar rods by Loomis and Scott. We both honestly liked the feel of the LL Bean rod better than the others. I remember he was very shocked and so was I. I highly reccommend you check them out, I don't think you will be dissappointed. If you are you loose nothing, Bean has a great return policy. Feel free to ask any more questions if you have them.

I have a pair of their breathable waders. I don't know who makes them for Bean but they are very nice and have held up to heavy use. Much better than the Orvis that leaked after one season.

I have a 7wt. double L 9 ft. that I use for steelhead. I like it a lot. I spent a day using a sage rpl 7wt. and truth be told it was hard to tell the difference. there used to be a store here in bend, so it was cheap. thier return/repair policy is pretty damn good. free free free. sage charges a few $$ for repairs.
granted I still like to support my local stores.

I have an LL Bean Visa credit card which allows me to buy from their catalogs without paying shipping, when charged on the card.

Everything I've bought from them has been of excellent quality, but pricey. I've never had to return anything because of second-rate workmanship or materials.

But if you're looking for bargains (with the exception of selective sale items), You might want to shop around in the retail stores first!
