Default Had to put my lab down

Rough night, as I had to put my yellow lab down. She did all I ever asked of her, and will sorely miss her. Misty would have been 15 years old in August. I was able to take her to her favorite hunting spot as a final resting place. Although I knew this day was coming, it was still pretty rough. Here is a picture of a happier time.

I can hardly read these posts since I've been there too and the memories just never seem to fade. The little beauty I've got now is my constant companion as we hunt, fish, hike, or just play on the living room floor - like tonight.

There are no words to say what a man feels - just keep focused on all those good times you two shared....

A Dog's Prayer

Beth Norman Harris

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Treat me kindly, my beloved master,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your
devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands. Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Corlyn,

My family and I had to do the same thing with our 11 year old Scotty 2 months ago. I know the pain you and your family must feel.

People say they are like family. I know it is true because I still miss and think about BeeBop all the time.

Remember the good times and memories during this tough time to help you through this.

Sorry to hear of your loss. A person knows that the day has to come, but there is nothing to do to prepare. Its like the loss of a family member.

Thanks for all of your kind words. This group understands things like this better than most. When i was young, duck hunting was about getting as many ducks as possible. When I got a dog, all of that changed. The excitement in getting a duck or goose, was knowing I would get to see her retrieve it. I was pretty lucky that she lived as long as she did. I took her out this year for a couple hunts. She couldn't get after the ducks, I don't even think she heard us shoot, but you could see an extra bounce in her step anyway.

Thanks again.
Corey

Corlyn,
Your buddy has passed but the memories will last forever. I lost my yellow this year also (14 +) and I still miss the heck out of not having her around. Take comfort in the fact that you had her for 15 years. You took great care of that buddy to have her reach that age milestone. Their gone but never forgotten. As I write this I keep pictures of my buddy taped to the monitor. Best darn friend I ever had.

I have a special ,soft spot in my heart for bird dogs. The pic said it all. I was reading your post while i had a class full of students. There were a couple kids (8th gr.) who noticed the little tear in the corner of my eye . They didnt ask why , they knew it was something personal and left it alone. A bird dog is a very special friend and it is so tough to say goodby. id. p.

Sorry for your loss. 4 years ago I had to do the same for my young 3 yr old lab. Don't be sad that she's gone, be glad that she was part of your life......

The Curate Thinks You Have No Soul

The Curate thinks you have no soul:
I know that he has none. But you,
Dear friend, whose solemn self-control,
In our foursquare familiar pew,
Was pattern to my youth - whose bark
Called me in summer dawns to rove -
Have you gone down into the dark
Where none is welcome - none may love?
I will not think those good brown eyes
Have spent their life of truth so soon;
But in some canine paradise
Your wraith, I know, rebukes the moon,
And quarters every plain and hill,
Seeking his master ? As for me,
This prayer at least the gods fulfill:
That when I pass the flood and see
Old Charon by the Stygian coast
Take toll of all the shades who land,
Your little faithful, barking ghost
May leap to lick my phantom hand.

Man,,, Im sorry about your loss. She was a neat dog, I remember you tossing several tennis balls into the wooded area near your old house and she would find each one of em with a big smile on her face.\
I remember the stories, the boat sinking, the deer, the not so dead goose, they always made me laugh.

Im sorry for your loss...Just remember the good times and hold them close.
