Elk in Hillsboro
Okay, who remembers the bull that use to roam the OHSU grounds west of 185th? I use to drive by there in the early 90s and see a full branch bull and a cow back in a fenced field belonging to OHSU. Anybody else ever see him, or know how he got there and if they are still around?
Also, we use to see a small herd on Evergreen near Glencoe high school, but haven't heard of Elk over there in 10 years either.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
I herd of him (Pun intended), but I never saw him. I drove 205th twice a day for years... early morning & late afternoon on my way to work and back. I figgered he was a legend. It's back behind the primate center and fully fenced, incl. barbed wire along the top.
I have regularly seen deer along Baseline, though. (including a few mortalities) and one doe with her fawn that came bounding across Jenkins from Nike to the wooded area to the south when they first started on MAX.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
There is a good sized heard, just North of the 185th, Cornelius Pass Junction, I saw about 20 there a couple of months ago, no big racks though, it is the area to the right side of the road with all the signs that say "no hunting" out in the big field.

LOL,,, sipping the juice from the Tuna can , I like the oil based...
Yep, you got the location spot on. Funny it seemed everytime I looked for him I found him. I bugled and cow called him a few times, he didn't respond much because was wise to the game, lots of others knew about him too. There is no way he could jump that fence, in fact the same chain link fence is there. I use to see him on the NW corner of the field on 205th right up next to the tree grove.
off to get a case of tuna...

Now they want out of the Willamette unit where they use to hide.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
Small herd hangs around Rock Creek Campus of
PCC. No hunting on college property. We've had
to run a couple of Bow Hunters out of there.
Never seen a big branch bull only a spike.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
I remember about 5 years ago, during archery season, a 4 or 5 point bull was hit by a tri-met bus on Murray Rd. It was in the news.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
Last year maybe late spring, I was headed for hwy 26 on Shute Rd. and saw three branch bulls running through the field next to the ditch ~200-300 yds south of 26. Headed for the woods/homes west of Shute.
I remember the one on Murray, I couldn't find a bull in the woods but someone found one in Beaverton.
Then there's the bull that broke into the zoo last year.
I'm gettin' real anxious

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
well to answer the question, there was a bull elk inside the fence, no cow though. The bull came from 185th and was shood into the front gates of what we call the monkey farm or primate center. The family farm i work for has farmed taht ground for over 25 years i been there 12 so i remember when the bull was only a spike. The people at the farm named him elvis..... rarely seen but always heard esp. during the rut.. poor guy had no idea what a cow was anymore though. Anyway to make a long story short when he was a very nice 6 point he wasn't as cute as everyone thought when he started rubing and scraping on cars...lonely bull syndrome so the ODFW tranquilized him and sent him to Jewel. He was a dandy bull we miss seeing him but there are plenty of boone and crocket bucks in there as well so were always entertained.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
Geeez Gus, trolling for hot hunting spots on ifish in the urban growth boundary is low
Denny told me about your ethics, but to try and get a lead on a bull on the Nike Campus is even outside of the stories he relayed on to me about your other techniques.
BTW - I never did believe the story where you guys shot the big bull with an arrow in the brush, you waited an hour before you started tracking, and then you tracked blood right up to the road where it died in the road, and somebody loaded it up and hauled it off before you got to the harvested animal. I might have to start a poll and see who believes that kind of story, you know the big one that got away type thing. I think its getting deep in here, let me put my boots on
OHSU, Glencoe High School, Clackamas town center ..... is there any place you wont hunt elk?

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
There used to be a herd of 34 cows and 6 bulls that traveled the railroad tracks and hung out by the Orenco Golf Course. Would see them every morning for years from the corner of what was the corner of 219 & Cornell. They were on Doc Pritchards (Primate Center as of 1960) before that. Romler Acres was vacant for years and the now intel. Fed there.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
6 days ago, I saw a herd of 10 elk, three of them were bulls. They were standing in the field at the intersection of 185th and Germantown roads.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
My neighbor saw a 5-pt on the Sunset just before the zoo exit last year. Don't forget about the big boy a year or two ago that "crashed" the zoo party and died of heat stroke after too many darts. Also, about 10-15 years ago two bulls went down by Terwilliger curves, I think one died during darting/xfer attempt.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
Some poor lady nailed a nice deer on Murray Blvd just south of Allen the other night. Did a lot of damage to her Lexus. She was very upset. I did not have the heart to tell her since she killed it she should drag it off the road.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
I talked to the man that herded Elvis into the Primate Center tonight. Elvis was a 5 point bull when he entered the Primate Center and a 7 point when he was trapped and moved to Trask Mtn. were he joined a group of about 40 elk. He spent about 3 yrs at the Primate Center before he was lured into a live trap using apples as bait. I believe from what I was told quince was his favorite fruit to eat. I heard many sories of how he would become very aggressive during the rut and charge at people. No one was ever hurt but this is why he was trapped and moved to Trask Mtn.My friend worked at the Primate Center 30+ yrs before he retired. I enjoyed the stories he told about Elvis and all the deer and other animals that were their.

Quince , we had a quince tree. I use to get my friends to bite into one  .
Hopefully, Elvis wasn't too domesticated and he survived longer than the transplants from Jewell do.
I love this thread, maybe it should just be renamed to Big Game in the City. Keep the sightings coming.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
The bull you asked about was moved in 99,00 to the stimsons tree farm in the back 40. His rut behavior was a threat to the people at oshu. The deer are still there though. And nice bucks at that.I have wanted to bring my bow along and tag out in there. The other reading I saw above are the herds that runsbehind the zurburg tree farm or the rock creek herd,There are two herds or more along skyline. And several bands around helvetia and pumkinridge. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions of the local elk herds.

Re: Elk in Hillsboro
I live on the south end of Hillsboro on River road on 5 acres. In the spring of 1997 we had branch bull(3 point at that time) in velvet in our back pasture about 150 yards from the house. He wondered around for a couple of hours before moving on to the neighbors place. We saw him several times over the next couple days. If I can find the pictures I will post them. I wish I had a way to load the video off my vhs camera.
