Hatchery Info Needed
For a college writing class I'm doing a 15 page paper on the effects of hatcheries on northwest rivers. I'm definately going to slant it in favor of them, but I know there are people who support natural rivers too. I need graphs, links, articles, phone numbers, ect. that might help as well as some ideas from you guys as to what I should include like do hatchery and native fish interbreed or do some hatchery fish miss the hatcheries and for compete for spawning ground with nates. I definately want everyones .02 on this one. Thanks for any help.

Re: Hatchery Info Needed
You should definitely consult 'Salmon Without Rivers' by Jim Lichatowich, it's one of the definitive works on the topic, while also being very readable. Good luck on your project.
Also here's a link to an online library of relevant studies, this will also provide you with authoritative citations for your paper:

Re: Hatchery Info Needed
Short Hop,
Here is a WDFW site that discusses the hatchery program and the review processes that they are currently undergoing.
http://www.wdfw.wa.gov/hat/hat-main.htm
ODFW may have similar information on their site concerning Oregon hatcheries. Also talk to the fish division people of the two deparments, they are a great wealth of knowledge.
I will look through what information I have and see if there is anything else that may help. I deal quite a bit with hatchery funding in Washington.
'Salmon without Rivers' is a great source.
Where are you currently studying? I graduated from OSU and took a great class on the Columbia River from Jim Martin who is a former wildlife biologist and an expert on these matters. He is only teaching the one class and is an outside instructor. But you may be able to get contact information on him from Oregon State.
Good luck!

Re: Hatchery Info Needed
Short Hop,
Be careful, professor Hills is a member of Trout Unlimited. Just kidding. How about slanting it toward the broodstock program. There is a ton of information on the programs in place on the Nestucca, Wilson and Siletz rivers. Call ODFW they would be very helpful and they have that new office in town here where you could pick up a ton of info...maybe even interview a few people.

Re: Hatchery Info Needed
So you have decided upon a slant before even investigationf the issue??? ok..
Well i'd second James Lichatowich's book.
and the bibliogophy at the native fish society's website. In neither case will you find much good about hatcheries. If you want a pro hatchery paper i suggest you wrte it with hope for thr future not based on past hatchery practices. or even current practices for that matter. You might also touch on the econimic impacts hatcheries have. because if you base your arguments on strictly biological/ ecological arguments you'll find very little pro hatchery stuff..

Re: Hatchery Info Needed
Thanks so much for the help. This is exactly the stuff I needed, unless of course one of you has an extra 15 page paper about hatcheries laying around.
