Cool fire extinguisher
Taking the power squadron class, and they showed us a fire extinguisher that I had never seen before. It is made by Fireboy (not a sponsor so I wont provide a link) and it had a head on it that looks like a sprinkler system in a building. When the motor compartment gets to 175 degrees the unit goes off by itself.
Looks like it might be a good deal for a permanent mount under the motor cover for an inboard board.
Here is a pic

Re: Cool fire extinguisher
The AMHS had these over the gensets at the shore facilities, both CO2 and dry powder. I liked 'em.

Re: Cool fire extinguisher
They ain't too cheep either. The 25 cu ft is 99.95 at a boating store in Jantzen beach. The 75 cu ft is 179.95. Seems they aren't CO2, they are Halon. I wanted the price on the 50 cu ft (1.4 cu meter) which is about the size of my engine cover, but they didn't have it. probably about 135.00

Re: Cool fire extinguisher
West Marine sells the extinguishers but only 200cf plus. i think you also need an alarm system so you know when it goes off. that is $75 and a device to shut the motor off if you are unable to. that is another $200

Oh, the beauty of Halon. Just make sure you have your OBA or an EEBD on when the Halon fires. Otherwise, you aint breathing.

Well at least by taking this class Roy now knows where the bow of the boat is and that it is okay to drink a beer while underway. Now if he can figure out what they really mean when they said choke the motor. Seems the had to sand his fingerprints off his last victim.
