Where to doe hunt?
I have 3 points towards a doe hunt this year and would like to try a new unit. I have hunted east and west biggs and the white river unit before. I'm leaning towards trying to find a unit similar to white river, but I'm not picky. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Where to doe hunt?
CJK-
I can't offer you much advice on the doe hunt, since I normally hunt the coast range, but I was hoping that you could give me some advice on the White River Unit. After 5+ years in the coast range and only 1 buck to show for it, my dad and father-in-law want to go east a bit. From a friend of a friend we have tentative decided on the White River Unit.
How is it, if we are decent hunters, do we have a real chance? How about public land?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rip'N'Lips

I normally hunt heppner, it seems to be the only
place with a decent amount of publicly accessable land out east.

Rip'n'Lips -
I past few times I've hunted White River I have been on private land, so I can't help you out much. I can tell you that the last time I hunted on public land there wasn't a shortage of animals, but that was at least three years ago or so.

I forgot to say that there is only 5% public land open during doe season. I'm not sure if there is more during buck season or not. I would check that out before putting in for that unit. I would also agree with "lor" on the fact that heppner may be your best bet out east for public land, but there are also a lot of hunters to compete with.

Re: Where to doe hunt?
I generally try and Doe hunt the same area I am hunting for bucks. That way if I see a Doe or a buck I want to take I can. I usually hunt the Santiam unit for those reasons. Won't be Doe hunting this year but adding to my points, I will be up to four after this year.

Re: Where to doe hunt?
cjk,
How come you don't want to hunt west biggs again? I live in the White River unit and have drawn west biggs doe tags the last 2 years. Even though the public land is kinda rough country(this is were I now buck hunt) it is easy to get permission to hunt does on a farm. If you have hunted there you know how easy it is to fill your tag with a nice wheat fed doe. Since doe hunts are just meat hunts you might as well just take the best eating meat.

Re: Where to doe hunt?
chromebright,
I buck hunt east biggs every year, so I try to doe hunt in another unit for a change. I like to get out and try hunting different units. By the way, where do you normally doe hunt at? If you don't mind me asking, who's land do you normally hunt? The land owners I've talked to have gotten pretty tight with their land the last few years, but that's during buck season usually.

Re: Where to doe hunt?
If you can get anywhere close to the Deschutes, does are like rats along the river and it's one of the most gorgeous and rewarding places in Oregon to hunt. We usually go down from Macks Canyon in a sled, but have seen lots of rafters make the hunt to the mouth...

Re: Where to doe hunt?
Rip-n-Lips, What part of the coast do you hunt? I may have some good places you could scout that I used to have good success in.
