Default Don\'t feed the deer!

Just a silly story that I found checking the news today.

Woman avoids jail on deer-feeding conviction

May 7, 2003 6:47 AM

Cheektowaga, New York-AP -- A western New York woman won't go to jail for feeding deer -- unless it happens again.

Anita Depczynski (dep-CHIN'-skee) was charged with violating the state conservation law by feeding a herd of tame deer at suburban Buffalo park.

The 62-year-old cleaning lady was granted a conditional discharge yesterday. But the judge told her she could face a jail sentence if she's caught feeding the deer again.

She could have faced up to 15 days in jail and a 250-dollar fine.

She says she fed the deer because the animals are so tame, and the area so congested by development, that they would starve in winter without human handouts.

But she told the judge she would comply with the law.

Default Re: Don\'t feed the deer!

I've got friends in Connecticut and they tell me most suburban areas are overrun with semi-tame whitetails. Hunting isn't allowed in most municipalities, there are no cougars, lots of people feed the deer...so they are thick as fleas. It has become a human health concern because Connecticut is the epicenter of Lyme  Disease, carried by deer ticks. There are many, many deer/auto collisions in those NewEngland suburbs...way more of a problem than we have anymore here "out west". A few areas have tried to thin out the deer using archers...but little old ladies stop any control in the area where my pals live (Stamford).
