Albino Bear?
I guess this is a 4 year old Albino Black Bear taken in Montana. Has anyone ever seen one of these in the woods. I have to wonder what would be going through my mind, if I chose to shoot a bear that looks like this. If I hadn't seen this picture, I would probably assume I was crazy, or looking at something else, and not pull the trigger.

Re: Albino Bear?
I have heard of and had friends who have seen "blonde" bears, but never an albino. Pretty cool looking. Rumor has it there is a blonde black bear running around east of Dallas, OR.

Re: Albino Bear?
The only time i've ever seen a white bear was in British Columbia on a little island where almost all the black bears are white. They are protected under Canadian laws. So protected they wont even let people know the name of the island. These bears are not albino though.
In Washington it is illegal to kill a wild albino of any species. Even the pinto deer around Grays Harbor are protected.

Re: Albino Bear?
The bears that Hen Slayer is talking about are sometimes reffered to a "Spirit Bear." They are a sub-species of North American Black Bear. Also known as Kermode bear. Here is a link to a site on the spirti bear. http://www.savespiritbear.org/about_...o.html#wheredo
Albinism can occur. I've seen photos of albino deer. There is a difference between albinism and color phase.

Corlyn,, You would have shot it! Then walked around camp talking about the two types of hunters, the quick and the empty handed.

Re: Albino Bear?
there was an outdoor show on not too long ago, that documented white (albino) bear. As I recall-- these are black bear, found mostly around BC and Alaska-- There are considered sacred by our Native brothers and sisters-- that's about all i recall--

Re: Albino Bear?
There seems to be more out there than I thought....
Here is a good photo essay on a sighting.
The author asserts that the bear is actually a specific breed of bear called a "Kermode Bear". One that only exists on the West Coast of BC.
