Default Another Downrigger question(s)

I've got a Scotty 30" Strongarm and I want to pull the steel cable and change it out for 150lb Power Pro. Is High Vis yellow the way to go or stick to green? Is the high vis an issue?

Next having not pulled the steel yet - is there a hole to tie into for the power pro or should I use a layer or three of dacron backing to avoid line slip?

Finally the line counter - how do you reset it - I was going to add more that 200 feet of power pro?

Thanks in advance

Pop the top cover off and the reset is easy.

I don't think the yellow will be a problem but it would be nice if it came in red.

I think there is a hole in the spool. If not, go to a vet supply or feed store and get some Coflex stretch bandage. Put a layer of this on the spool and then attach the Spectra. I've done this with my reels and it works better than Dacron backing.

Using spectra will void the warranty.

Nothing like the feed store for medical supplies , I was in the ER in West Virginia and I swear it had wood shavings on the floor and a mainger

My mother in law (one who lives in Keno) used to run a feed store in Minden/Gardnerville NV.

wonder why the spectra would void the warranty ( I guess it could cut the line guide) - the hum from the steel is anoying - I kept looking for the wave runner that sounded like it was about to run up my backside till I remembered that the wire would hum.

When it gets bad I'll replace SS cable with Spectra no mater what the warranty does.

No electrical conductivity, less drag, corrosion proof and no hum.

Has anyone else been having trouble with their Scotty downrigger wire fraying? I purchased new downriggers last year and replaced the wire this spring. Already I've had some frays and cut some wire off.

Prior to owning the Scotty's, I used Cannons and never had a wire problem in five years. I did a close-up comparison of the wire and it appears the Cannon wire is braided more tightly and coated to prevent corrosion.

Has anyone else had similar experiences in the last year or so? I contacted Scotty but they denied any change to their wire. It sure seems brittle to me.

My Scotty is two years old too. Absolutely no problems with fraying.....or anything for that matter!

If there is a problem, it is a very recent one because I know of two others that purchased Scottys last year and have had fraying cable.

I just purchased some Cannon wire to install on my Scotty and compare. I'll give my report in a couple years!

I went with the 250 lb green. This was recommended to me by the Scotty reps at this years Sportsman's Show. It is closer in diameter to the steel cable that you are replacing.

Yes, there is a hole that you can tie the braided line to when you get close to the core after removing the steel cable.

Good luck!

When my riggers start singing, I know I am at the right speed.

Power pro sounds interesting.

Replaced my steel cable with Power Pro Green 250lb. Got it online at Cabela's, since I live in the sticks.... I'll never go back to steel.

Tie an Arbor knot with a litte double side hockey tape around the spoon.

I like the 200lb or better test as well
