Default Shotguns or Blackpowder?

In some places in the regs it says shotguns are ok to use for hunting deer. Can you use them in place of blackpowder weapons in a blackpowder hunt?
If not, please give me your top choice for a weapon that I could buy for this purpose. Also, I have been bow hunting before, but am curious to know if you have to get camo'd out and hunt like you do in archery season with a blackpowder rifle. I want to take my wife and just need to find out if it is gonna be as demanding as bow hunting is. Thanks everyone who can lend some help to our situation.

Are you meaning can you use buck shoot in a black powder rifle instead of a single lead ball? If that is the case I think you would be ok. But....I don't see how they would let you use a rem 870 in a black powder hunt.

Good Luck.

Salmonking...no you cannot use a shotgun in place of a blackpowder rifel in a blackpowder only hunt. (XXXM series hunts). I have been slowly working my way towards bowhunting and have really enjoyed BP hunting.

Given the OR muzzleloader regs, you are basically not going to find a gun that will shoot much beyond 150 yards with a marksman behind it. For the average Joe, 100 yards will be pushing the limits of both shooter and weapon.

I have taken two deer with my muzzleloader. One was at 25 yards and the other at 15 yards. I pretty much hunt as if I had a REALLY high powered bow. Full camo, face mask, gloves, etc. I have friends that 'road hunt' during BP season and are suprisingly successful.

Overall, it is probably not as demanding as archery, but it0 is not a cakewalk.

No you can not use a shotgun during a blackpowder season. The choice for a blackpowder gun is like everything else it all depends on what you want to spend. Remember though that oregon has tightened the regs for blackpowder hunting and you need to read these before you buy. For one thing the gun must have an open ignition.

The wet weather on the coast could hurt you if you did not pay attention to the blackpowder gun. If you can keep it dry, camo is not necessary on the westside. It is fairly easy to get within 100 yards of an animal over here. Finding a hole to shoot thru is tougher.

If you go BP hunting, i would suggest the Knight Bighorn in the 26 inch barrell. It is an awesome shooter, and 200 yards is not out of the question. And it is open ignition. You just have to replace the fiber optic sights in oregon.
