How's hunting around La Grande?

I am moving to La Grande. Never hunted this area before. Is there good hunting really close by? Deer and Elk? Which way do I go? What else is really good in this area. Retired now, and so I don't get around like I use to, however I sure would like some help with this one.
Thanks everyone

Re: How's hunting around La Grande?
you are moving to a great area for hunting and fishing. Plenty of elk and deer around down there. Our buddy lives in La Grande and shot a big 5x5 whitetail off his property last year. He is right on the edge of town.
There is also great upland hunting, as well as steelhead fishing in the Grande Ronde.
You should have a great time.

Salmonking,
What are you interested in hunting? Elk and Deer are as close as Mt Emily. Turkey, chukar, ducks, etc are close by too. Bass and Crappie on the Snake, Steelies in the Grande Ronde if you like to fish. Saw five mule deer behind my place last night when I was looking for my horses and the quail are eating me out of house and home. I can get you headed in the right direction if you promise not to gloat too much about being retired!

Re: How's hunting around La Grande?
salmonking, D3smartie has no clue what he's talking about, he's from california for cryin out load!! There is absolutely no wildlife anywheres near LaGrande. Don't go to the spring creek area! You won't find any elk or whitetail! None, nada, zilch! You are best off to sell any firearms you may own now while over here as there is little use for such items over there. They will be a burden upon you, and you will be shunned and viewed as an undesireable should you choose to drive around town with firearms in the gun rack.

Re: How's hunting around La Grande?
I haven't hunted that area in about 6 years, but there are good deer and elk hunting very close. XXL-- I used to hunt out of Union for elk. Out of Medical Springs to be exact. I hunted over there for years. That is a great area. Email me if you want some areas to check out.

Re: How's hunting around La Grande?
I wish I could afford to move BACK. That's a wonderful area, enjoy it and take care of it.
Drop me an e-mail if you want some more info about the big game.
When I was in HS there we did a lot of pheasant hunting in the valley but that got skinny when they stopped releasing birds. We had to head towards Vale to get decent roosters.
Grouse hunting is fantastic ,good Blue grouse spots can be somewhat zipperlip. If you find a good one it should keep producing as long as you don't overhunt it.
