Default Thoughts on Shakedown Cruise for DB w/ Kicker

Just got an 8 hp Yami for my 16 ft Clackacraft DB. I would appreciate recommendations for a lake or other area for a shakedown cruise, preferably with opportunities for kokanee, trout, etc. Plan to use the DB for tidewater chinook fishing at Tillamook this fall and need to break the motor in. Thanks in advance.

I don't know really what the break in procedure is for your motor but I'd suggest you drop the whole fishing thing and take it out for a pleasure cruise. Besides, you'll likely be busy running the boat, thinking about where to stow everything, etc. to focus on fishing. If you're really wanting to trout fish, Promontory would be an excellent choice since Estacada lake is closed due to the construction at Rivermill. Closer to home, you could put in at Clackamette and motor around the area to scope out springer spots for next year.

Wait, did I just say springers???

If you follow the procedures outline in your manual, you wont be doing any fishing and the book says no long running at a constant RPM for 10 hours. I just spent two of the longest hours of my life today breaking in a new 15hp 4stroke yami. At least now I can run it more than 3/4 throttle although I dont need to.

Never owned a yami and so far I'm impressed. Very smooth and quiet. Wish the *** honda on the jetboat ran as good.

The first place I took my Crackercraft when I threw a used 'Rude 8 HP on it was Chinook Landing. I cruised (I should say crawled) down to the Eastern tip of Gov't Island then up to the power lines toward the Sandy. A nice little jaunt. It was so easy that my 11 year old daughter took over the helm for a bit.

Good luck! And if you see a red and white Crackercraft out there puttin' around, gimme a shout!
