Here's the new pup...!!! Pictures!
As you probably read, I lost my Lab a few weeks ago. My daughter can't sleep too well, and she really misses Susie.
I've been thinking about getting a Springer Spaniel. I've hunted over a couple and they are awesome dogs. I need something a little smaller that a Lab, because I don't have the 3 acres I once did. A Springer just fits my family.
Anyhow, I'm looking for a reputable breeder, that has great dogs. I want one that is primarily a great family dog, will sleep on my daughter's bed at night, and is going to be a great hunter. I don't give a hoot about any bench dogs. Showy stuff is wasted on me.
Please PM me, or sent a message to my e-mail...

As a (sort of) compromise between my wife (wants a Cocker Spaniel) and I (want a hunting dog), we have come to a decision, it must be a Springer. Besides my daughter loves Springers, and they are good dogs. I mostly hunt pheasants, with a little duck hunting thrown in. Springers work great for both.

You might want to attempt a call to one of the Springer clubs. I suggest that perhaps Janet Christinsen out in Banks could give you the names and numbers of several sources for Springers.

Check the general classifieds. There is a 2yr old female yellow lab for free. He sent me a photo. Good looking dog, 55lbs. My wife and I decide that having two of these might be too much

Re: Here's the new pup...!!! Pictures!
Pup's on the way. We'll get Maggie tomorrow. She's a black and white English Springer Spaniel. I looked a long time, and checked out many sources, and she's a really good dog. I'll post pictures tomorrow when she get's here.
[Oops, looks like it'll be thursday before the weather will be good enough for her to fly. Apparently the airlines will not ship a dog if the weather is going to be above 85 or 90 degrees at any city on the route of shipment. It's forcasted to be over 90 for the next few days in Lincoln Nebraska, and that's where she's coming from. My daughter is bummin' hard!]

Re: Here's the new pup...!!! Pictures!
Mojo - My last dog was a choc lab but before that I had a springer. Great dog in most respects...but he cost a lot in vet bills due to getting foxtail seeds imbedded between his toes, then infected, etc. Happened several times even though I regularily checked his feet.
The other big problem was hunting in eastern Oregon, esp. in Malheur county, there are thick stands of weeds with huge burrs in riparian areas...where the pheasants & quail are...and these burrs would attach themselves to the dog's long fur, under his belly, in his armpits, between his toes...so bad he eventually could barely walk...I had to take scissors along on every trip to cut the wads of burrs out. Left the dog in less than show condition  ...I had him sheared in summer but you can't have a sheared springer in winter. You can oil down a long haired dog and supposedly it inhibits burrs from attaching...but what a mess.
Other than that, springers are great dogs.

GSA,
My hunting partner has springers, and he sprays them with Pam cooking spray. The cockleburrs pull right out. I'm planning on Maggie having a hunting coat, not a show dog coat. Keeping her sheared during the summer will help. I guess I'll get really good at pulling burrs out carefully though...

Here is Maggie! I hope I don't mess her up. She is pretty smart, and already a HUGE part of the family.
She's an extremely well bred English Springer Spaniel. I can't wait till she is ready to go hunting  !

Oh, and Tilla, most dogs would rather smell like butter than mesquite. I'm thinking mesquite might draw in coyotes, and that would be bad...

Mojo,
good luck with the new pup. a flushing dog too, so now we can hunt upland together. I'd make the trip south for some of that.
