Re: need new varmit rifle any advise?
Where about will you be hunting? How far out you gonna be shooting?
That bushmaster varmint is one really nice gun, shoots really nice. I was lucky to shoot one not to long ago and wish I had one. But for as much money your gonna spend on that auto, you could get a sweet Bolt action sniper rifle with a real nice scope set to kill.
The US military use's the Remington 700 for there snipers. The one that I would like ranges from $700 to $1000 bucks. Now there's no way am gonna have the money for that any time soon but hey, I can dream. The model am looking at you can get the 223, 22-250, 220 Swift and a few other caliber's. That model has a 26 inch barrel length and is drilled and tapered for a scope.
If you got the money to spend, get a bolt action with a bold barrel.
Just my 2 cents, others might think different.

Re: need new varmit rifle any advise?
The previous post was right on in my opinion. I have the model 700 with the heavy fluted barrel, kevlar stock, mounted with a 6.5-20 Leupold. I am consistantly impressed with the way it shoots. I bought it in a .223 because I wanted to have access to cheap ammo. It also has the most different factory rounds per caliber available. You can buy match grade ammo for cheaper than you could reload it. I have been able to shoot .40" groups at 100, .80" groups at 200, and 1.3" groups at 300yds. It is every bit a precision gun. In the field, I am not afraid to shoot coyotes at 500 yds. I would buy another tomorrow if my wife wanted to use it instead of her Ruger 10/22 for rats.

The .416 Remington is adequate for even the largest varmints

I third the bolt-action .223. I have a ruger M77 heavy barrel with a 6-24 scope. I was shooting eggs the other day at 300 yards pretty consistently.

Take a look at the HOWA 1500 heavy barrels or the varminter series in thumb hole stock. Howa's are great shooter for the price.

If you want a bolt gun that is a real bargain, try the Remington 40x in one of it's many forms. They are usually 1/2" or slightly better from the custom shop. Real triggers on one too.

Re: need new varmit rifle any advise?
I have a Ruger 1V in 22-250 with a 10X Zeiss scope. Thing shoots 1/4" groups at 100yds. I have no real attachment to it however. If you or anyone else is interested, email me. Gun's worth $575, scope more.

Howa is made in Japan and known to be very accurate and they use to make the Weatherby Vaguard... see them at www.legacysports.com

Re: need new varmit rifle any advise?
I would go with the ar-15 you can find one with a match upper, also they are a blast to shoot, If you want something for distance go with a 300 ultra mag or a 7mm ultra mag. Also check out the online site for guns I bought my 300 ultra off of www.gunbroker.com, I have a colt sporter it is fun to shoot and I can hit almost everything at 100 yards with it. My Ultra mag can go much further and with the break they feel about the same recoil wise.

Re: need new varmit rifle any advise?
Hard to beat the old reliable Remington 700. Whether it be a factory varmint rifle or you build one on an old action. I have been hanging around the bench rest game for a number of years. Before all the custom actions such as Nesika Bay, Hall, BAT, or Kelbly (to name a few)became so popular, most bench guns built on a production action were built on the remington 700. That tells me something about the action. I am in the process of putting together a new rat gun. Took an old remington 700 in 243. Trued the action and put in a sako extractor. Took one of my old lilja 6mm barrel and rechambered it in 6ppc and recrowned it. Now if I could just find a job so I can put a stock on it.
