The or is why buy a quality pontoon boat????
Several weeks ago, my daughter came for dinner and saw my new to me water ready pontoon boat. Now Lindsey, who just got her masters in teaching is now finding time in her life for her dad.
A month ago, when we where at Depot bay on vacation, she wants good old dad to teach her to play tennis. So that's what we did.
A few week later, she sees the pontoon boat and wants to know how safe they where and could she tip one. I told her that they are fun and as long as you have a good quality boat, you should be ok.
So she asks her dad to take her on a float. Saturday, I decided to do the Kalama since I knew the water was low and she would have a better time dodging rocks than to do the N. fork Lewis and dodging jet boats.
We put in at Pritcard's and with just a few minutes of practice in the pool above one of the rockier shoots/tailout it was time to run the boulder field.
I tried to explain the concept of pointing your boat at the object you don't want to hit and row away and also that it is ok to float over rocks that are lower than the bottom of the frame. As you can see, she took my advice and learned to do it herself.
Rock to avoid:
And her reaction to my advice:
So she is home free....WRONG!!
Me on the water ready, loaded with Giz, the dog:

I had intentions of flyfishing, but we had fun teaching her how to row. We saw several nice steelhead and one on the bank about 15 #.
She had a great time and is wanting to go again.
Anyone else want to plan a float? Let me know.
And yes, getting a good boat is the key to having a safe day if you should be in the learning mode, or for that matter floating rivers with rocks.
