Where to get a scope mounted?
I picked up my new rifle today, there was a mega-sale on a 700BDL deluex in 7mmMag, and I just couldn't turn it down.
So now I need to have my scope mounted. Has anybody got a favorite shop in the Portland area that's could mount a scope for me? Given that I have rifle and scope I'm happy to pay to have it done right.

Re: Where to get a scope mounted?
It is really easy to mount yourself, especially a bolt action. Slip scope into mounts and adjust to your eye and comfort, align crosshair vertically and tighten. Pull the bolt out and secure rifle in place and adjust scope at about forty feet. Look down bore to fixed object forty feet away. Be sure to adjust rear mount adjustment to center. This will put you on the target at 25 yards and you can make final adjustments at the range. Usually there are instructions with the scope. Good luck!

Re: Where to get a scope mounted?
Its a do it yourself thing in my opinion. I wont let anyone at a shop mount a scope for me, they usually use a boresight which consists of a steel rod placed in the end of the barrel. That is big no-no, i dont want anything steel in the end of the barrel that would damage the crown. The way to do it is to just like duckcall said. Take the bolt out and look through the barrel and make your scope adjustments so the barrel and crosshairs point to the same place. Piece of cake. Im not a fan of bases that have windage adjustments, but they are some of the most common mounts out there. If you do use them, they have one advantage, you can leave the scope at near the mechanical center when you boresight it, which is a good thing. Burris also has rings with poly inserts that allow you to do the same thing, and you can use the better dual dovetail or weaver type mounts.

Re: Where to get a scope mounted?
One more thing, if you havent got scope mounts yet, and you dont want detachable mounts, you should check out talley's new mounts. I use weavers on my rifles because they are super tough and detachable, and i use irons for a backup. If you arent concerned about the need for backups and dont want detachables, the new talleys are just awsome. The base and bottom ring half are one piece, they are as tough as a mount you can get. And the best part... they are around $35 for talleys! If you didnt know, talleys are considered by a lot of folks to be the best money can buy. I would use thier detachables instead of weavers, but they are waaaay expensive. Their new one piece mounts are about the cheapest thing out there. Might be worthy of consideration.

Re: Where to get a scope mounted?
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll mount it myself.
SeanD, you are a man of good taste. I've actually got an extra set of rings for my scope kicking around... But those Talley's are so nice... More freeking descisions.

Re: Where to get a scope mounted?
Another thought...
A lot of guys lap their scope rings before they put a scope on. Some smiths might do this for you, but i doubt your local bi-mart type guy will. That might be the only reason i would consider having someone else do it. Lapping the rings takes care of any burrs and minor misalignment problems. It also keeps the heavy ring marks off the new scope from the rings scratching the paint off and makes for a better grip on the scope.
Ive never had a set of scope rings lapped on any of my rifles, but ill be doing it myself in the future. Most guys probably dont care, but if you want the best you can get. Of course the talleys and other top brands may not need much if any lapping to be perfect. And the burris rings with the inserts dont need any. Just thought id throw that out there.
