Default Ketchikan Help

So, I have a trip to Ketchikan coming up in a couple of weeks. I'll be up there for about 4 days, just to kick around by myself. ANY help on where to fish from shore, tackle, etc. would be more than appreciated. I lived in AK for quite a while, but have never been to Ketchikan.

Thanks,
-Milty

There are guys that fish from the bridge on the south side of town, just past where the big cruise ships dock. I think right now there are lots of pinks going up that creek.

You can cast for humpies off shore at Mountain Point at about mile 6 south or better yet rent a skiff from the people just past the Mt. Point boat launch and troll the shoreline of George and Carol Inlet for coho and chum. Herring Bay should have some humpies and chum by now too, it's about 3 miles south of Mt. Point.

90 degrees!!! At that rate Mendenhall glacier will be gone in a year!!!

the creek in town was "smokin'" for pinks last week. The successful fishermen were using pink maribou jigs off the dock at the mouth of the main creek in town. The creek was JAMMED w/ pinks too.

Ketchikan Creek above the Steadman Street bridge is probably closed to fishing now.

My parents are due home in a week after being in Ketchikan for 6 weeks. Pinks are still in thick, and they've been catching quick limits from the bank tossing pixies. Skiffs are cheap to rent also and a couple days ago they put the hurt on some silvers, as well as a bunch of bottom fish. Should be a silver show when you go there.

Thanks, guys! This might take the all-time prize for the least-planned Alaska fishing trip, but your good advice has given me hope.

There is fishing from the bridge and docks. There are places to rent poles and nets on the street.

Actually, I lucked out. I got a room at a recommended resort for a decent price, along with the rental of a 14 foot skiff. Lady at the lodge tells me its pretty much a cut-plug show, so I'm breaking out my double 4/0s from springer season. I'm sure we'll get 'em dragging some hardware around as well. Thanks again for all of the good suggestions and PMs! I'll post a report when I return.

When I lived there, we used to catch quite a few silvers out of Ward Creek just North of town. You can fish the creek up from tidewater, and there are a few pools that they stack in pretty thick sometimes. Check the regs, but there is also some fishing to be had upstream from Ward Lake as well.

Trolling cut plugs or spoons in the bay between the Ward Creek Cannery and the old pulp mill can be dynomite as well.

Good luck!
