Re: best broadheads ?
I have tried bout every broadhead and most of the name brands have been good penetrators. The brand I use now is Rocky Mountain premier. They are good broadhead plus are better priced than Thunderhead and Muzzy.Just my opinion. Good luck.

Re: best broadheads ?
Thunder heads or Muzzy's have performed time and time again for me over the years.

Re: best broadheads ?
I used to be a die hard thunderhead man, until I saw the steelforces in action. One, they have a huge cutting diameter, two, they have 4 blades (more the better) and three, they fly like my field points. So there's no resighting in my bow after I put them on. I've seen some thunderheads come apart after hitting bone, not badly but some of the blades would break or come loose but the bull I shot this year I hit ribs and the edge of a shoulder blade with two shots and when I pulled the arrows out I had to touch up the blade a little and it was back in the quiver after a spin test. You're going to pay a couple more bucks for them but it's a very good investment and very very sharp.

Re: best broadheads ?
I haven't shot anything with it yet, but I really like the Steel Force too. It flies like my target arrows and the main blade is knife blade material, strong and easy to sharpen. And the cutting diameter is much larger than most others. It also has a secondary blade to inflict more damage but will break away for less resistance if it hits bone.
With that bow and setup almost any good quality broadhead should do the job.

Re: best broadheads ?
I took an elk a couple years back shooting a thunderhead 100gr. I was a bit disappointed that the head shed a blade when it hit bone. Maybe I took to seriously the advertising. I think you could find an equivalent head for less cost. One thing to remember, don't get an expandable if you plan on hunting big game in Oregon, they aren't legal.

Re: best broadheads ?
I've got an 6 point bull elk vertebra with a Thunderhead 125 buried clear to to far side of the spinal cord (forgot to hold low shooting downhill  ). The bull dropped in his tracks and the broadhead held together great. I have yet to have one fail.
With that said. I will be checking out the Steelforce heads. Always looking for a better mousetrap.

Re: best broadheads ?
I've killed two deer with 100 gr. Thunderheads and this year I dug one out of a bull elk's bony nasal cavity that we killed during rifle season. It had penetrated all the way through the nose bone and was sticking out under the skin on the opposite side. All blades intact. Arrow had broken off flush with the nose - only thing that made us notice it was a little green scab where it was healing over on the shaft side.

Re: best broadheads ?
Can't say it's odd. Arrows get deflected, people get excited, etc.... It happens with every weapon. Not everyone makes a kill shot on an animal. I've seen guys shoot right thru the middle of a bulls horns during bow season because that's what they were looking at. Didn't do it on purpose but people make mistakes.

Re: best broadheads ?
I use Muzzys and am very happy with them. Don't go with the four blades unless you want four feathers on the end of your arrows. You need to aligin your blades with the fleching or it wont fly straight.......

Re: best broadheads ?
I put a post on here about it when it first happenned and people posted all kinds of stories about bullets and broadheads they had found inside of game animals. I'm guessing the arrow hit a branch and got deflected or the archer took too long of a shot or perhaps the elk went to lick it's butt right when he released  . But you're right, it must have hurt! He was a nice healthy 5 point though and he was feeding away when we shot him.

Re: best broadheads ?
hwfl is correct on 4 large blades, but the Steelforces have two bleeder blades that don't change the wind shear of the arrow like 4 large blades would. I shoot them with three fletches and they fly perfect.

Re: best broadheads ?
Muzzy all the way. I use the 125gr 4 blade (with 3 vane, 29" carbon arrows) and they fly perfect. Muzzy makes the strongest broadhead out there.

Re: best broadheads ?
Don't know for sure but I read somewhere that the more blades the less penetration you get. I like the innerloc 3 blades. They are basicly the same as a muzzy except the tip goes all the way down along the blades (on the inside). I think they are stronger. I tried the rocky titaniums, but was unhappy with how they went together. It sure did a number on the mule deer buck I got last year though.

Re: best broadheads ?
I've been using 125 gr Thunderheads just cause that's what I grabbed first. I use old blades to tune and target each arrow then spin them back just enough to put in new blades prior to the hunt. This is a nice option when flying or horse packing my gear.
I shot a 5 pt bull through a rib, across the body, clear through a shoulder blade on the far side ( which is still hanging in my shop) and pirced the skin on the off side. Also shot a cow elk right between the ears in the back of the head (KT you're right, funny things happen, 50 yrd shot, she saw the release and ducked and swung away, flight was perfect for a quartered away lung shot till she jumped) anyway, both broadheads completely intact and both elk were yummy.
I have also shot bear, deer, caribou and turkeys with good accuracy and success using T-heads and Aluminum arrows.
Can you change blades on the steelforce while on the shaft?

Re: best broadheads ?
I've used muzzy 90 grain 4 blade for years on elk and deer. They are almost indestructable. The trocar cutting tip locks in the blades. They are advertised as "bad to the bone" and they are. The trocar tip was developed long ago to penetrate armor. Good stuff!
