Default Scary stuff!!

There is an article on Oregonlive about three hunters that all died from Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease. They are speculating it could be related to venison and Chronic Waisting Disease. :depressed:

Bad stuff! I read somewhere that cooking the meat does not destroy the prions. Can anyone substantiate this?

Sounds like sensationalist journalism to me - at least at the headline level. After reading the article it sounds as if it's about 100 times more likely to get killed in a car accident on the way to or from hunting than get attacked by any rogue prions.

But you guys better stay out of the woods just in case.

A guy from Coos Bay died of this about 2 years ago. We knew him pretty well. The prognosis was it's impossible to know where he contracted the disease because it can lay dormant for so many years and out of nowhere hit you. He only lasted 6 mo. after he was diagnosed. However, he used to live in the midwest and he never had killed a deer or elk in Oregon. So I have a hard time believing that these people necessarily developed the disease from Oregon. Unless they never traveled in their life and never ate anything but deer and elk.

In the end it's almost impossible to say where it origninated from. But I agree with Skein, better not chance it and become a vegetarian!

It does seem like quite a reach. I guess the reason it bothered me is that the thought of not being able to eat venison is more than I can handle.

It probably is just typical newspaper sensationalism.

I did a reaearch paper on the subject last year and could not find any proof that anyone got the disease from eating venison. The information I found said that removing all the bones and not eating the brains would make it less likely for the disease to even enter your body. I would like to know how much venison the people ate as well as did anyone else in their families have the same disease?

It is a similar type of prion disease as "mad cow". Cooking meat does no good. They found that those cows' ashes burned in incinerators were found to be infective.
