Re: Night biters
It's been windy until about 9:30 then it calms down to a light breeze, it gets cold though, when my wife goes with me she wears a sleeping bag, I wear an insulated jump suit. There were several other boats in the area, The one closest to me also caught a nice salmon, we guessed it to be about 35 lbs.

Re: Night biters
yes they fish the same, except from the bank I've found a three foot leader works best, from boat I use a three foot leader and two foot dropper.

Why is it I always grab the rod that doesn't have the fish on it when she goes with me?
[image] [/image]
here's a better pic of the fish anyway, 25 lb chinook, one nice steel, & some guppy's, the big ones got away.

I think I would like to give night fishing a try. I'm assuming you are using a Wazzat. Where do you purchase them, Or are you using something else (if it's not a secret and you don't mind sharing). Thank you,

Re: Night biters
The slicks you see just offshore of sand beaches, four hours into tide, run boat up middle of slick until you find 12 ft of water, position boat above 12 ft so lures are fishing on the hump, takes time to find these spots but well worth the effort. 99% of fishing success depends on where you fish.

Re: Night biters
Just in case anyone wanted to know exactly how I rig these lures.
First time I ever measured any of my rigs, leader is 36 in, single hook is a 1/0 gami, treble is a VMC#4 light wire for fast penitration, ALL POINTS SHARPENED. all those fish were caught on the same set of batteries along with about 5 others that were caught in the daylight, I like a really dim lure at night, at least 24 hours of use before night fishing, but the dark green, blue, or purple lure work at night with new batteries. The dropper length measured at 27" I just make them knee high and have never measured one until now. I use 1, 2, or 3 oz. roundball leads, depending on depth and current.
I tie figure 8 loops on end of leader and dropper, inthe dark it's way easier to pick everything from net when unhooked from rod. I use 20# line and chamelian max leader 20# also. The drag is set at about 10 lb enough for a good hookset, but not high enough to bend hooks or break line, or rip hooks from fish, I land a lot of fish that are barely hooked, If I would have put thunb on spool even once the hook would have torn out. size 7 swivels and three way, I rob snaps from single swivels and put them on three way, The corkey prevents swivel from being reeled into top eye in dark, broke eyes and lost fish, and lures until I started using this. the dropper goes on the empty snap.
Hopes this helps someone.

Re: Night biters
They work great with bait, Earlier this year I was using them with shrimp, now there's a lot of squaw fish and pea mouth so I've been just using lure with scent, If you can find it the "Smelly jelly sticky liquid salmon feast" has been working good, this spring I was using the lure as an attractor for spring chinook, had several definate takedowns with no hookup? when I reeled up my herring was untouched?, wised up to that one quick and put a hook behind lure ahead of herring, about half the springers I caught were on this hook.

I was using whole green label herring, wazzat was about three feet ahead of herring, instead of flasher.

Re: Night biters
Went night fishin last night, nothing for two rods, zip zero nadda. my cousin anchored next to me, he caught a 5 or 6 lb steel that had been through a net. I knew it wouldn't be too good because of the small tide, but I thought we would have caught a fish or two, Oh well I guess that's why it's called fishin.

Re: Night biters
I just got back from bouy 10. The only highlight of the week was when I decided to use a wazzat and 2 6mm beeds directly above my cutplug herring. I caught a nice little 12lb URB on Monday. The rest of the boat was skunked! Still have yet to try them at night.

I saw them at a sporting goods store in Longview the other day. It is the only major sporting goods store in Longview. They were $10.00 apiece.

Re: Night biters
About mid tide there are lines on the surface of the water, caused by the slower current next to shore working against the faster deeper water, this causes a strip of smooth water that is usually easly spotted. I run my boat right up these "slicks" until I find a hump or shallow water, sometimes I find these right next to shore and will plunk from shore there. The fish move along these "slicks" either inside, right in or just outside these "slicks". Most times I find these spots and there is no one there. There are lots of good spots that never get fished.

Went out last night for more video, and I remembered my camera. The bite was slow. David caught this.
A friend of mine was anchored next to me and caught this.

And I caught this.

Re: Night biters
Just thought I'd bump this one forward so the guys trying to sleep at night on the river would see it. I'll be out at night next week for more video footage, favorite tides, only filmed two trips so far, got 13 finned stars on tape, released all but 2. Coulda kept limits. out of canning jars,I do not freeze fish, put up 43 cases of fish this year, don't want any more.
