Default First Kokanee Trip

Had some college buddies call me saying they would be in town and wanted to fish in my new boat. I have been reading about Kokanee fishing on Merwin on this message board and gathered several tips, so I thought I would contribute. We left the house at 5:45 AM on Thurday, only to run into road construction just out of Woodland. Got to Spl. Bay at 7:15. There where a dozen trucks and trailers already in the parking lot before us. We motored directly across the lake, but did not mark many fish there. So we headed West, found all the other boats and fished there. Hooked our first fish at about 8:00.

As you can see, it was a nice day. This one took a green wedding ring with brass spinner with ANISE and purple food color soaked corn. I ran ford fenders off my downrigger balls. Most fish where 35-55 feet deep. We where rookies armed with only reading this msg board. We landed 8 fish with the largest being 15".

Other fish came on a orange superduper behind an orange 000 Dodger (with Ford fender off the downrigger ball). Used orange food color shrip oil soaked corn. Important tip, use snubbers! I did troll one rod off the back with 2oz kidney weigh. Hooked a large fish with a small rainbow Kokanee Kandy. I took quite a bit of drag on my steelhead rod with 6lb leader. I forgot to use a snubber on this line. Lost the fish just before it came into site. I think most other boats got limits. We where happy with our 8 fish by noon. Had a nice dinner.

Thanks to this board for our sucess.

VanDaddy.

Riffe has coho(dont need a snubber) Merwin has kokanee(sockeye)same lures will work on both. On Riffe this time of year they are deep, but schooled up. Ive caught 30+ a day in early september. I think i might try Merwin, nice fish.
