Default Fishing in/around Sun River?

First off, I realize there's a river there...just not sure if fishing in it is allowed, productive, etc. If so, let me know good places/techniques to try there.

If not, where else near by could a guy fish?

River is Deschutes. Check regs, but should be open. Thomas lures in rainbow trout pattern. Wickiup and Paulina are options if you have a boat.

Are you a fly fish kind of guy? The wife and I will be over there next week. We always go up to Fall river and fly fish. Its real easy and catching is pretty good there in the morning or evening. Even durning the day with a sinking type fly its pretty good. Its not my faviorite kind of fishing, but no Salmon or Steelhead over there, so...... Have fun.

The Deschutes through Sunriver is supposed to be a good brown trout fishery, casting lures to undercut banks. Hooked something huge on a fly once that was probably a big brown. A lot of rainbows rise at dusk. The water is pretty flat with a surprisingly strong current If you fly fish, try the upper Deschutes between Lava Lake and Crane Prairie and if you have a float tube, the views at Hosmer while fly fishing for Atlantic Salmon make it a great trip. If you don't fly fish I can't think of any place that wouldn't be better with a boat, but you can rent them at most of the lakes on the Cascade Lakes Hiway. The Sunriver Fly Shop has good info as does the hardware store in the business park acroo the street. Enjoy!

If anything, I'd be limited to fishing the immediate area there by all the rentals...assuming my wife OK'd that.

fish the mouth of the morina on the resturant side. Fish down river from there. All the way past the logs. fish it before day like till about 9:00am. Then fish it again at 5:00pm till dark. Use #7 sinking trout looking repalla, if your a spinner fisherman and retieve it slightly fast so the lure is woking. I will say the you will get a fish.

I used to fish that area several years ago (I grew up in Bend). I don't know the current regulations but if I was stuck in Sunriver I would fish around the marina drifting a worm with a splitshot. All of the above replies are also accurate, big browns with a rapala. Fall river is great but make sure you know what parts are open. Wickiup has some large browns and kokanee, you can catch them from the bank on the north end using power bait and corn. I have had a lot of luck fishing around Benham falls with a rooster tail.

good luck

Good point baltz. I have never done that, but crossing that footbridge and riding up and down that dirt road on the other side would give some good access. Great suggestion.
