Grrrrrr... Savage
A while back I started a thread on my first hunting purchase when I bought my scope, and late I bought my rifle. I got a basic synthtic savage in 30'06.
I've been trying to get through a box every couple of weeks at the English Pit, and I'm having a lot of fun shooting. Enough fun, I thought, to justify a better rifle. But today I was out shooting and I put six remington factory core-lokts into 1". This makes it really hard to justify buying another rifle. I think I'm going to have to get a second rifle in another caliber so the savage becomes "back up."
If you have any great ways to justify another gun when the one you have works perfectly well, lets hear them.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
I can use logic and reason, but that is stupid. If you want another gun, buy it. But if you want another gun that is time and time again more accurate than a Savage( out of the box production stuff here) you will have to look pretty hard.
Why not a 25 cal for varmint sniping and maybe Antelope( you need to buy it NOW so when you get a tag, which should be in 10 years or so, you are familiar with the rifle). Or a .22 cal for varmints. Or a .338( he man elk rifle).
Guns are like dogs, boats, and fishing poles. But common sense has very little to do with the fact that I need another dog, 3 more boats(have 2 already), and I am looking at more rods and reels( the first 40 don't have it covered).
Common sense and rifle justification. You crack me up. Are you NOT gonna eat that steak cause you are worried about cholesterol? Life is too short.
Mark and the only child but not for long if I get my way dog.

Because you want one.
I have over 20 centerfire rifles but I was a gun dealer and still have some stock left from the "Going Out of Buisness" sale  Every Caliber from .22 to .416 with the exception of 8mm.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
RSF, Forst begin shooting extremely crappy ammo W/O cleaning your gun.(very important do not clean gun unless its with wd 40, it helps w/ unreliability factor) Soon it should jam.. Then the Gun is UNreliable and you'll be forced to buy another one. This procees will work on any gun   .

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
I told you so!!! Now the other serious problem you now have, is the extremely versital caliber. You are gonna have to go much bigger or much smaller. Id do both.
For me, i decided that a 30-06 was a good deer gun, and elk gun. So i went bigger and got a 35 whelen. Now i think i need an antelope gun (nerver been antelope hunting, but im saving my points up) and longrange varmit and coyote gun (again never been) so my next one will be a 25-06. Three all based of the 06 in 25,30,and 35 caliber, thats what i need.
And then i need the 223 or 22-250 in case i want to go blast some varmits that my 10/22 can't reach. And i recently have a strange desire for a 375 H&H....just in case.
Justify a reason? It's a new gun man, that enough!

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
Sean,
The 375H&H is one of my favorite rounds. The recoil isn't too bad and the knock down power is great, 300gr @ 2600fps. I also have a .375 reamed out to use the 8mm Rem case (.375X8mm Rem.) that kicks hard due to the weight of the rifle, 9 lb. My .416 Rem and .416 Dakota realy kick too hard to shoot as much as I would like.

A strange desire for a 375H&H?! How is it strange? You never know when you're gonna have to stop a charging cape buffalo. If we're out hunting for elk and we're surprised by a cape buffalo, you had BETTER have that gun handy.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
What is so strange about wanting a .375? It hits hard, shoots flat(especially flat considering how hard it hits), it is the smallest big gun, or the biggest small gun-depends on where you stand. I will most likely skip the old H and H. But I have a .338 that never shifts zero and shoots very tight groups. A .416 would be neat to bonk elk with. Especially on the west side where range is short.
My next rifle will be a 25-30 cal single shot(most likely a Ruger, but only cause the Dakota is more than I can spend on a hunting rifle). Chambering is secondary to pretty wood. All of the available chambering choices will kill deer when shot in the lungs. The triggers are not too bad, for a Ruger at least.
Maybe after that a Remington 40x in Swift. Then a Weatherby. A lot of rifle buffs scoff at Weatherby, chosing the Mauser/Winchester designs. But Roy did right with his California blonde guns. For no other reason than that, I will own a blued/ shiny stocked unit. Maybe .257 or .240. The smaller gun would make a neat prarie goat whacker. Someday I will buy a pre 64, but there are others......
Mark and the well armed dog.

Guns are like children....You know where they are, the general condition, which one is best for what, and what they are capable of.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
You don't have too many rifles until you start duplicating or even quadrupling the same calibers.
I've recently parted with six firearms and I still have a couple duplicates in my arsenal.
Most were puchased using the "investment" justification theory. Which is fine, they will never lose there value and some are worth much more than I paid. Problem is some sort of strange attachment forms and you can't bring yourself to part with them even when your extended outrageous offers.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
The explanation to the Mrs. is "Caliber Gap" -- as in "Honey I have a "caliber gap" -- why that '06 I got is a great gun, but I wouldn't want to tear up a great little Blacktail -- so to be sure and not waste anything I need to fill the "Gap" and get a (insert caliber here). Or "That '06 is a great gun -- but this year we'll be hunting (fill in the unit, or state) and the range we will be shooting at is just way out there -- I need to fill my "Caliber Gap" with a 300 Win Mag so that the animal goes down -- even at extreme range.
Remember this is not slamming the venerable '06. It is however, an approach that has worked for me in the past -- my successes include a .17HMR, 25-06 and a new Beretta shotgun --
This will take a little practice and modification for your situation -- But for me it will always be "Caliber Gap"
Good luck
Chuck

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
I love my Savage. It's in the 300 win mag. the only problem is the kick. It puts up a 1 1/4 in. group at the 100 yrd stick.

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
Chukrchaser,
how bout trying the old gun procreation explaination. See hon, when you put a 338 and a 30-06 together in the safe, and shut the door... pretty soon a little 243 shows up. Next time you open the safe- a new baby gun!

Re: Grrrrrr... Savage
I tried that "procreation" line with my ex. Now she is my ex
I have a 1948 spanish mauser, chambered for the .300 savage, i reload, and I shoot .59" groups at 300 yrds.
I did gey a new shotgun tho.
Ya just gotta get up close and personal with your guns and let them show you what they are made of.
