Tuna out of Newport
I am heading to Newport tomorrow afternoon to fish Friday and Saturday, if the weather cooperates and the 5 and 5 prediction is wrong. I originally planned to tuna fish but might end up fishing for halibut. I don't have access to look at SSTs and I wouldn't know exactly what I was looking for anyways. Can anyone give me there best prediction for what areas/numbers will be holding tuna out of Newport in the next couple of days?
I know that noone knows for sure, but how far out do you think the tuna will be in the next couple of days? Was anyone out there today or going to be out tomorrow that can give me a report/ Numbers?
Thanks for any advice that anyone has to offer. If I get out I can always go to the pile or the ranch for halibut but getting into some tuna would be great! Even a chance to get into a few tuna would be worth it for me.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Save your money with these fuel prices.. Tuna are now at least 40 miles offshore.
Here is a free SST.
http://www.terrafin.com/sstview/samples/freeoregon.htm
It is usually updated every few days.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Does the warm water move much over a couple of days? With a north wind will it most likely move out? Or could it move in before Saturday?

Re: Tuna out of Newport
The warm water can move out in a matter of hours. You can start fishing in 61deg. water and by the end of the day it can be 59, or 63. It moves a lot.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Anyone out yesterday or today? How far out is the warm water today? I am heading out of town in a few hours. I will be sleeping in my 21' North River Sea Hawk in the Marina parking lot tonight and tomorrow night. It is charcoal with a red stripe with red/silver numbers. Stop by and say hi. If anyone got into tuna yesterday or today and don't mind sharing some numbers please give me a call.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Jesse, I think it would be pretty safe to say that if you wanted to get into fish, best choice would be to head for TUNA! Town(N45 00.000 X W125 00.000). On your way you may run into 60+ deg water, and if so, drop your gear in and give it a shot.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Thanks for the help. How far is that out of Newport? How far out of Depoe Bay? I will enter it and see when I get to my GPS but I was just curious.
It looks like there is 60+ degree water there. Is that the normal spot for tuna when they aren't in close?
Thanks again.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
From the Entrance Buoy at Yaquina it's roughly 51.7 statute miles. From the Entrance Buoy at Depoe it's roughly 46.7 statute miles.
Be careful out there!

To get rid of the tuna smell in your clothes, my wife sprays
them with Febreze before she washes them. So far the tuna
smell is gone when they come out of the dryer. Tuna clothes
don't have to be forever.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
We went out last Friday and went 47 miles at 295 out of Newport and never got over 60 deg. Caught 2 lost 3 in a half an hour in 58 deg water and had to head back in. Predictions were 2 & 4 seas. Good Luck! The SST don't look any better!

Re: Tuna out of Newport
Right now, temp-wise, it's a no-brainer. Go out of Depoe, head about 275 - 280 magnetic, 25 - 30 NM to the 45 line & start trolling west or NW.

Re: Tuna out of Newport
The charts are looking way better right now. You could head to the 45' 125' spot and get into a good bite.
