Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
Here's a question for you.
Some states require all hunters to go through a hunter safety/education course (I think that's correct) and I was wondering if they would accept the Oregon Master Hunter certification. I've been toying with the idea of doing that, and maybe this is just the push I need to finally go for it.
Does anybody out there know? How many of you have the MH certification?
Just curious.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
Skein...I have been toying with the MH program as well. (not the dog MH, I hate cold water. ) I don't know if other states would "honor" the OR MH program for some their special hunts. They might, but let me know if you find out anything.
Personally, I think it is a great program and don't understand why there aren't more folks pursuing it. Maybe we could put together an ifish 'study group' to get our MH certificate before next season.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
I don't know about other states accepting the Master Hunter certification.
As a bow hunting, states which requires bow hunting safety certification accept certification from classes taught in Oregon because it is based on a National Curriculm

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
I was going to get in the MHP a couple years ago, I ordered the lit., and then entered a busy phase for a couple years and let it go. I still have the packet, and I am going to do it this year. It really opens up the hunting opportunities, from what I have read.

As another incentive, If you have successfully passed the Master hunter Program and apply for damage hunts, Your name go to the top of the list for the county you applied, this would be in addition to any other MH's who applied for that unit.

I too ordered the packet, then got busy and never did it. The studying would be easy, but their is a pretty substantial volunteer component as well. Maybe this summer!
I like to use certificates and diplomas for wallpaper--and learn a thing or two along the way.
Hope they're purdy.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
I have hunted in Kansas and North Dakota recently. Both states require all hunters to possess a certification of completion of a hunter safety course. In practice, any certification seems to be acceptable and the card only gets a cursory inspection at best. With on-line and phone purchase of licenses, they just ask for a hunter safety number. I don't think they have any way of validating the #.
The state of Washington has a similar program as Oregon (Advanced Hunter Education Certification vs. Master Hunter Program). The requirements for certification seem to be different so I somehow doubt one state would observe the other's certification regarding applying for damage hunts and so forth.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
I too have all the information and was planning on getting certified, only to become overly busy. It seems pretty much common sense stuff, just time intensive.
On a side note:
I hear that they are offering a similar program for fishing. I think someone said the Fishing Geek was made the first and only honorary member of the Master Baiters!
Sorry Geek but with a picture like that, who could resist!

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
I have the Master Hunter Cert. in Washington, I don't hunt big game, so I can't answer those questions but I do get to hunt the late goose season.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
My hunting partner is going through the MH program right now. He said it is required that you have your Hunter Ed card. So sign up soon. $10 is a heck of a deal.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
Does anyone know if they keep records of those who pass hunters education courses? I passed one almost 3 decades ago but no longer have the card or certificate.

Re: Hunter Ed and Master Hunter
Fishplay, I had the same trouble. I took the course in 10th grade in High School. It was a class you could take. We even got to go shoot .22's during class. My, have times changed. I decided rather than try to track it down I would just retake the course again. The class is a lot different today. They cover a lot more information such as Bow and Arrows, Black powder guns. I am in my last week of class and it is a easy, informative class. You'd probably pass the test without taking the course.
