I've said it before and I'll say it again - the boat length shouldn't be the issue. If I have to lean over the side of a boat far enough for my feet to leave the deck in order to release a fish, I'm netting it. Cite me and bite me, but I'm not putting myself at risk.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but it's a ridiculous rule IMHO.

Thats only springer fishing but if you are fishing in the ocean and going to release a coho its better to never take it out of the water, just pop the hooks or cut the leader and let it swim away!

There should be NO exemptions. Everyone fishing in selective salmon fisheries where the fish have not yet "hardened off" should carry a de-hooker stick long enough to reach the water from whatever height their fishing platform sits above the water. Determine the "bonkability" status of your fish before putting it in a net! No need to endanger either yourself or the fish! Just get on the stick, folks.

My 20' Boulton has 36" sides cause I don,t swim. Fishing for springers in the Big "C" & Mult. Chan. provides instances for a cardiac event when attempting to release a native while leaning overboard when something the size of a small freezer explodes out of the water & takes your fish. I'm so gun shy now it's like working around electricity & anticipating the jolt.

If it isn't a keeper i just cut the line and let the fish swim away.I've been told this is the best to keep from harming the fish anymore than it all ready is.

Uh..in a word NO! Gut hooked (Swallowed bait to deep to retrieve is the exception :depressed
usually in the spring most are fishing with Kwickfish, or herring in the columbia where this rule or release was intended.

I don't think I'll be cutting my kwickies off or my Boa rigs from owner.

could result is a VERY expensive gear day
