Default Anyone else have crazy bird dog stories

Well, I think I have the smartest dog ever; he is most likely out smarting me most of the time. He is 4 1/2 months old.

I really wish I could have taken a picture, but I missed the opportunity.

Kodi and I were watching the Birddogs Forever show on TV today at lunch. They were hunting Mearns Quail with two German Shorthaired Pointers. When the show started and the dogs started running around the hills, Kodi sat straight up in his chair and started staring at the TV. He was getting pretty excited, so I turned the volume up a little. When the dogs went on point, Kodi got pretty intense and leaned forward in his chair. The birds flushed and you could hear the sound the make, then the shotguns went off. This is when Kodi jumped out of his chair and ran torward the TV with his tail just a wagging and then came back to me all excited. I told him to get back on his chair, he did and started watching TV again, then the next point and flush came and he did the same thing again. He did this 4 times during the show, I was just laughing so hard, I could not believe what I was seeing, you just would have had to be there to believe it.

Two years ago we were hunting in the Klamath marsh and we downed two honkers. My lab went after the one that hit the water just around the corner from us. I could hear this loud growling like he was getting in a fight with a coon or something. I started yelling thinking he was chewing up the bird or something. Finally he swims around the corner with this goose tearing every hair out of the dogs cheek and the poor dog can't defend himself while he's swimming but he's determined to bring it back. When he finally got back to the blind he threw it at me and made a lunge for the honker and bit it in the head killing it instantly. Then he looked at me like I was going to kill him for chomping a bird with a big hole in his cheek without hair. I started laughing so hard, you could almost see it in his eyes when he got back to the blind he was going to kick some arse on that bird. Gotta love dogs. Don't know how anyone could own a cat over one.

We were running across a large lake to our duck blind. My boat runs about 21-22mph at a nice cruise speed. My lab, who's about as gung-ho as you can get about ducks, goes right over the side after a duck. She likes to sit on one of the side seats in my boat. The duck flew across our bow,and I knew what was coming. I tried to grab her before she saw the duck, but she was WAY to fast. She went from one seat to the next, and right over the side. She hit the water and just crashed and burned. A couple endo's mixed with a barrel roll. If a dog can look embarressed, she did,if I wasn't so mad it woulda been hilarious. The worst part was my friends in the boat behind me watched it all happen. The had a good laugh that day.

When I was much younger I was avid about bird hunting. Had a new friend brag up his professionally trained lab and how this lab had champion field trial blood, could talk, walk on water, catch birds in mid air, you know the type. Well, we set out one Saturday morning. Stop at a field that always produced good birds. This lab is gung ho it's going in circles in the back of this old international scout. We get out, pull out our guns and this new friend opens the back gate of the scout. I saw this black flash fly by my friend and by me, heard a couple barks and into the brush goes this guys well trained dog. He starts yelling to get the dog to heel up. Now this happened so fast that he didn't get a chance to get a leash on this famous mutt. Anyway, we spent almost 3/4 of the day looking for his world famous dog. After driving around the country we located it. He could barely get it under control to get it into the Scout. That was the first and only time I ever hunted with that new friend.

Used to have a springer spaniel named Dexter. One day I was running down the Willamette in my jetboat with Dexter in his usual spot, up on the little bow platform, doing his hood ornament impression, I guess. Anyway, as I went under the RR bridge above Harrisburg my boat hit a sandbar that hadn't been there before. The boat went from 22 mph to 2 mph, Dexter went flying, then the stern wake came along and picked up the boat enough that I went right back on plane, over the sandbar, and ran over poor Dexter who was dogpaddling where he'd landed. Made a fast 360 and picked him up, none the worse for wear.

I was hunting once with my fathers high priced hunting dog. My cousin was with us and was babysitting this little blue heeler. He brought it along for kicks. We had dropped some ducks out in the slough. The hunting dog swam out there, sniffed the ducks, then went after a nutria swiming by. That little blue heeler jumped out into the water and retreived all the ducks.
Currently I am having problems with my viszla retrieving ducks. I brought my English Mastiff (pictured on the viszla thread) duck hunting and he is becoming an excellent water retreiver. He jumps into the water like a lab but the splash is quite a bit bigger. I was thinking of selling his offspring marketed as English Mastiff retreivers.

I almost forgot this story, though I hoped to forget it. We were camping up at Odell Lake and a huge storm hit. Wind, rain, sleet- the works. I was alone in my tent. I heard my fathers hunting dog outside whinning in the cold. I felt sorry for him and let him in the tent. He looked thankful to be in the tent and curled up in the corner. Later in the night I woke up to find a large pile of dog Sh-- squarely placed on my chest by that ******* dog. He was lucky I didn't wake up when he was doing it or he would most certainly be dead. He almost was the way it was.

I'll byte,
The first time I ever took My chessie goose hunting, He'd been staying at my parents for a while. Dad lets him get away with everything under the sun. After a little attitude adjustment on his part I began to set out my decoys. He was sitting there being a good dog. Me and one hunting partner were chatting it up and I began to say what a good dog OL TJ was being. About that time my hunting partner started smirking and turning real red. I turn around and look just in time to see my 9 month old pup getting "friendly" with a full body. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen, wasn't as funny then though.
He also got my neighbord cermaic deer confused with girls as well. That resulted in a rather interesting phone call. All in all I wouldn't trade him for the world though.

Our Beautiful new Springer Spaniel ( I was probably 15yrs old) Had completed the whole Feathers & training canvas bag routine. We took her out for the first jab of pheasant hunting. She did great, even flushed up a hen. BUT, When our friend hunting w/ us took the first shot "Krack-oooom!" "ArpArpArp....AOOOOOOOOOOO !"the dog was sooo darn scared at the guns report she *******! Then went running full speed, 2 miles back to the truck! It was THE FUNNIEST DAMN THING EVER! We never did take her out again. Became a nice fat mellow house dog.

1eyed...I can relate to the TV hunting stuff. My lab is the same way. During duck/goose shows, she gets up and "sniffs" the birds flying on the screen. They really ought to make a scratch and sniff TV for hunting dogs.

When she was 12 weeks she had some water exposure but nothing too serious. (kiddie pools and playing around the CR beaches). We went to Lake Shasta and finally got the house boat anchored up. I jumped off the back to go for a swim. She came unglued and all 20 pounds of her did a full WWF "suplex" off the side of the houseboat (about 3 feet off the water.)  Hit the water and came up swimming for me. We played around for a little while and headed for the beach. She promptly shook off, ran up the beach and jumped back in the water. No question my girl is a water dog.

When I was young my Dad and I were out quail hunting with our brittany spaniel , well it was getting pretty late so we were heading back. About 50 yards from the truck my Dad noticed the dog was no where in sight??? We called and called for about 15min with nothing. We started getting worried because it was not like her to just wander off. We walked about 150 yards over this small hill and low and behold there she was locked up on point near this patch of tall grass not big enough to hide a mouse in looking around like where the **** are you guys!! She then flushed 3 birds out of this patch of grass. After that we never took our eyes off of her when hunting. She was one great dog. RIP
Rachel!!! sniff sniff.

ps. anyone got any Brittany pups????

This is great! Ya gotta love them dogs!

Last summer we were bottom fishing off Vancouver Island, and the pinks were in. Pinks will usually jump three times in sequence, so sure enough, here's this pink headed right in the direction of the boat - about 40 yards off. One jump - Mattie got really interested. Second jump, she was poised. Third jump - two splashes! She had that "I'll bring him back, Dad" look in her eye. She was ready to paddle around until he came back up for air. "They do have to come up for air, don't they, Dad?"

She's my buddy.

Ok, I've got a couple more these brain cells have conjured up. I was pheasant hunting in Kfalls at the Miller Island hunting area and I was checking out when my dog was going apes..t in the back of my truck. There were other dogs around and I thought he must have some major runs or something and wanted out so bad, so I abliged and dropped the tailgate. He ran up next to the side of the checkout station and instantly froze like he had a bird. There were probably 8-9 hunters standing there with their dogs and everyone was calling my dog a mouse chaser and laughing at him. Well I was getting peeved because he wouldn't come back to the truck and I was getting laughed at so I went up there and said what in the h*&( are you doing!!?? Right then three ringnecks exploded from a little bush within 15 feet of all these hunters. I was proud of my little man and everyone took off after the birds. Well I was scolded by the checkout guys saying those birds were harrased by my dog and I could get fined for that. Oh well, hopefully someone nailed them but I was happy and so was Tuf (the lab).

The second one, my uncles dog in Alaska (golden retriever) is the wildest fish dog I've ever seen. I'd have to sneak out of camp to keep him from seeing me leave with my fishing pole and he'd always catch up to me in a couple of minutes from me being gone. As the fish were jumping (silvers) all over he'd whine and look back at you like there they are catch one!!! It got so anyoning I'd have to yell at him "I know I know!!" and shutup I can see them too. I felt like I was yelling at Wilson on Cast Away. When I'd set the hook he'd start running in circles and he'd chase the fish when I got them to the bank. It was funny at first but when it takes five tries at the bank to keep the dog away it got anoying once again. So finally I took the dog to the stream they were trying to get in and I said there, fish for yourself and I'll be damned if he didn't bring me back fish the rest of the day like a dang bear. Finally when the dog was outfishing me I had to quit for the day. Pretty sad.
