Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Bear just opened today with a couple of draw tags. Let's see some more of those trail cam pics too.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Repots August
Went for a cruise on the 4 wheelers tonight. Two herds of elk with spikes and a SUPER nice branch bull. Also four deer, one forked horn, and three yotes. No bear but we didn't spend much time glassing. Buckhunter

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
We went out to where we saw 10 bulls two weeks ago, they were about a half mile away at the time. Today we nearly tripped over them, only six this time. We saw a couple still in full velvet, all were shooters, at least 3 point in the Saddle Mountain unit. I don't think the big guy we saw last time was in this group, looks like they may be starting to break out of the bachelor herd. We watched for a while and two were locking horns, nothing serious just getting into shape. We saw at least that many deer but only one was a buck, and only a forky, but he'd look good in freezer wrap .
good luck
Myles

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
One of my friends went to the coast this weekend and saw a herd of 20 Elk with a 3 pt. bull and a spike in the herd right out in the open eating grass. I plan to be scouting it the next two weekends. Sitting on a hill just watching where they go.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
My father n law and I went out last night on the east side of the coast range and found at least 16 head of elk with 2 huge barrel spikes and a nice 4pt bull all still in full velvet. cows and calves look healthy big and fat . the key right now is to find water and green food. we got to within 40 yrds and they saw us and mosied out.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Just got back from a weekend scouting trip in the desolation unit. HOT HOT HOT BUGGY BUGGY BUGGY. I did find some elk, bucks and birds. I lost a pint of blood to the skeeters and 5 pounds of belly fat to hiking in the heat. I was up around the 5 to 6 thousand ft elevation. I was seeing critters until around 9 am and then after 6 pm. It's where I'm hunting this year.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Must be a lot of water to have all those skeeters? Is it still pretty green over there?

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Went to my hunting area last night after work. It's really getting cool at night. Seen two branch bulls on the way out.
One looked like a 5x5 and the other was not as full, maybe 5x4 or less. They were together on the edge of a clear cut and cross the road when they saw the truck. They weren't huge racks but nice to see,
I am getting pumped.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Saw a nice big bull this weekend that appeared to be fresh out of velvet. I was watching from an overlook quite aways from where he came out into some willows, so I couldn't tell just how good he was.
A herd of cows and calves were out feeding just below me also. The branch bulls are edging ever closer to the ladies!

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
My hunting buddy shot a 13" antelope in the Beatty's area yesterday. I get to help cut it up tonight.
He saw a ton of goats, even passing on some that were bigger than what he shot. Sounded like a fun couple of days

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Just got back from Warner Unit, and didn't see much. I had some specific areas I wanted to scout, but wonder if I'd have done better by widening out my search.
Saw a few goats, and they were the darkest I've ever seen. In fact, I've never seen antelope that weren't colored like, well, antelope. But not these guys. They were dark brown with little white showing at all.
There's still water up high and still water in some of the waterholes, but it was hot and dry most everywhere else.
They're doing some fairly intense logging up around Can Springs and on down toward the main road. They are working the edge of the burn but I couldn't tell if they were actually taking out burned trees. The ones I saw on the ground were all good trees, not burned.
The Wetlands themselves are bone dry. Lotsa rabbits.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Just spent yesterday am in the sticks with my daughter, got to show her a REALLY nice bull,5x6. one doe, one spike deer, and one really nice 3 pt buck w/eyeguards. Kind of half-heartedly looked for a bear, no dice. All in all a good couple of hours of sitting.
The bull is in a really nasty area that I have spent a few days during the last couple seasons trying to get close to. Don't know if he's the herd bull or not.
As you-all say, I'm getting pumped up!

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Just back from 4 days in Beatys butte. Saw 18 deer in the area I was in, none were bucks. Of the 18 deer 1/2 were faws so recruitment has been great this year. the faws all looked very healthy, even fat.
I did see a Dandy Bighorn (it was nearly black) and was able to direct a sheep hunter to the area it was in. He has my email address so I will find out soon how he did.

Re: Hunting/Scouting Reports August
Checked one of my trail timers late this afternoon. Have deer using it morning and late afternoon during daylight hrs. Can't identify any huge tracks but expect by the number of tracks that there should hopefully be a buck amongst them. It's off the beaten track so it probably won't be an opening morning bow hunt stand, but can use it later on if necessary.
