Default What's Hot Nearshore Out Of Newport?

Hi all,

I realize everyone is pretty focused on Albies right now, but I was wondering if anyone could offer a fella a tip on any current hot bites nearer shore?

Yeah, I know coho is done... as if it ever really started.

Chinook have been getting better recently, but it sounds as though they're pretty deep (50+ fathoms?). Or can anyone point me in a better direction?

How's the rockfishing been? I'd be perfectly happy finding some blacks, cabs and/or lings. Any area been producing better than others? I tried the south reef last time out and did well, but the water's changed a LOT since then.

Any tips at all? I really do appreciate it!

Wow. 100+ reads and no replies. I'll just take that as a sign of how bad the near shore fishing has been...

I'll reply to my own post in case there are any others who, like me, are looking for a fishing report in parts of the ocean closer to home than 45-125.

We managed to get out for a few hours Monday. Ocean was beautiful, but the fog was THICK. Don't even consider going out there without a good GPS, understanding of how to navigate with it, and a marine radio. Even then, be careful!

We searched North & South of the buoy line for any salmon in waters from 100'-250'. Didn't see hide nor hair of ONE.

Finally gave up and went after rocks and lings. We went to a part of the south jetty we've been successful with before, completed a couple of drifts, and hit our limits of blacks. Lings took longer, but we managed to get them eventually.

Blacks are big and healthy. Lings looked a bit peckish, but were still respectable... the biggest was 38".

Good luck and be safe.

You caught a 38" ling? I have seem them underwater but never on my line. Peckish?

I wonder how hard the bottomfish are beign hit with the lack of salmon - especially by the charters.

Oops, my bad. Guess I ought to wake up first before posting. The biggest was 28". We couldn't find any lings of size. 38 would've made my year.

The rockfish have been getting pounded pretty hard due to the lack of Salmon. Most of the Charters aren't even going out for them or are running combo trips. This was the main reason for the limit reduction. There should be some scattered chinooks in the DB Newport area as the local fish return to the Rivers. The Sacramento River chinooks that ODFW was hoping to come up, never showed up due to the warm water and lack of food. Glad you got into some fish.

Thanks, Walty. We were happy to find anything to put in the box.

I was surprised that we weren't marking any fish while trolling. A couple weeks back, right after the colder water showed up, we saw quite a few scattered fish at various depths, but we saw nothing this time out. It was spooky.

I'm pretty sure there are now salmon all over the place out there.... 30 to 50 fathoms, from Yachats to Depoe Bay.

The upwelling is there, the plankton is there, the feed is there, and the temps are perfect.

Now if you can just get out in all this wind.

I think you are right Mark.

I also think the lack of response is due to the fact that the ocean conditions have kept most off the pond (rock and roll one day, fog the next).

I think you are right about the tuna, too. When we finally got out, I didn't even throw in salmon gear and the net was still in the truck.
