Re: Dog question?
Watch for these symptoms: depression, fever, appetite loss, diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes, discharge. If you notice these symptoms bring your dog in for an examination.

Re: Dog question?
I dont think there is a huge hurry to get to the vet today if your dog got into the fish today. It takes a couple days for the symptoms of salmon poisoning to appear.
I dont know if the landlocked salmon carry the disease. I do know the fish get it from a snail on the west coast and I would assume that snail could easily be in inland as far as Detroit but an not sure.
Keep a close eye on your dog. If you want I think you can pick up a dose of medicene for salmon poisoning just in case.

Re: Dog question?
I don't have the answer for you but I think if it is a bad exposure, time is important. You could call an emergency vet clinic, I would guess there are ones in the Salem area. If not call the one in Tualitin, its open all night and you might at least be able to stop the worry or swing into action if the news is not good. When my sons dog got into salmon they had us pour some hydrogen peroxid down her and she threw up in about 10 min. then they had us bring her in. I don't know if this is necessary or wise in your case. Wish I could help more.....sorry.

Re: Dog question?
WRO, I honestly don't know if they can get it from a landlocked fish or not. I would check with your vet. Best solution is to start them on antibiotics right away and that will avoid any problems. Normal incubation period for Salmon poisoning is 7-10. Here is a link to a thread about it awhile back Salmon Poisoning

Re: Dog question?
Ive heard rumors that some dogs get it, some dogs dont...Or another interesting one. If the dog gets it, and lives through it, the dog will never be effected by eating contaminated salmon again. Any truth to these ideas?

Re: Dog question?
All 3 of our dogs have had it.
They got "Mopie", took to vet, treated, back on their feed, doin fine.
I hear that it is rare for them to get it again. I've seen all 3 licking salmon blood, etc..since and they have never had it again.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!
WRO I think it would be a real good idea, for the sake of your dog to go back to the site, pick up all the fish that you can find, estimate how much your dog ate, estimate his weight, factor in your weight, and eat an equivalent amount, check your vitals for the next 48 hours. ie-your thick skulled chessie weighs 95lbs, your skrawny carcass weighs 190 lbs, he ate 2 lbs, you eat 4 lbs. Get the picture?
Only do this if you love your dog!

Re: Dog question?
I'm not sure but I think they can get it from any fish.

Re: Dog question?
Just curious. Do they have to ingest flesh or can they get salmon poisoning by just licking the outside? I've got a black lab that wants to go but I'm reluctant to take him because of the danger.
