Default viszla

Viszlas are great dogs, I hunt with mine for both upland birds and ducks. He seems to think he's too good for the ducks though and often "blinks" them. I then rely on my back-up "retreiver" an English mastiff(who is actually quite good at water retrieves).
Any suggestions on getting the viszla more interested in ducks..... He's very birdy otherwise.

thanks

Degner,

You're right, Viszla's are great dogs, but I think of it as somewhat like the push to have a "pointing" retriever (lab). Why not let them do what they do so well - upland birds - and let the water dogs go for the ducks?

...that's probably why I have so many boats.

Skein - who is not a real dog trainer nor should ever be confused with one.

Hey, Degner,

Where'd you get your Viszla? My wife and I keep talking about getting one but don't know of any breeders in the area. My mom has had two of them and they are really a neat dog.

I'll never part with my lab, but sometimes we think a playmate for her might be fun.

You might try a mallard-shaped retrieval dummy (Cabela's) for training. This summer include alot of play in the water. I've had Vizslas since '74 (just got my fourth one last Nov.) and they've all been good water dogs. It's amazing to watch the way that they can scent the bird from it's oil floating on the surface.

You might check in to NAVHDA.They have a book called Training the Versatile Hunting Dog.The Viszla is a continental sporting breed that is designed to be a good all around dog for both upland and waterfowl.I would also(if not already done) FF your dog. When did it start to blink ducks?

Thanks for the tips

I bought my dog from a breeder in dallas, ore. She has litters for sale fairly regularly(perhaps too regularly). Nice dogs though. She advertises mostly in the Oregonian.

We just bought and are awaiting delivery on two pups from first generation imported Hungarian Viszlas. I plan on breeding them, if appropriate, in around two years or so.

If I can find their phone #'s I'll post it if you are intersted.

Thanks, Degner, and yes, we're interested. My mom ran across a breeder with first-generation dogs, but lost the guys name and address. Don't know if I'll get one, but I'd sure like to talk to him.

Dang, those are some nice looking "boys." You're not attached to them or anything, are you?

Keep me in mind when you breed your Viszla, will you? No guarantees, but I might be interested.
