Default Anyone see that boar at the show?

I was trying to explain to Crambone about the ranch in eastern Washington by Cheney that has the big game hunting. Mostly, the size of the stuffed boar that was at the booth. Honestly. it must have been 6' from its head to the middle of its back haunches.

Did anyone else see that pig?

Yeah, I did. WhoooBoy, how'd you like to run across that bad boy with just a handgun or bow? I didn't have much luck talking to the guy though. All I got outta him was "hmmpff's" and the old "I'm a big hunter" attitude. Maybe I hit him at the wrong time, but I sure didn't go back. Would have liked to find out more but didn't care for the attitude.

Sure would like to try pig hunting sometime. I've heard conflicting stories about the meat, but they make a really impressive European mount.

Shein,

I got the same "air" from the guide.

Hey, let's go! Northern Cal has the pigs. I'll bet we can figure it out (or at least have a good time).

I camped next to a guy who took one with a bow on a ranch in Eastern Oregon around John Day. The ranch offered both pigs and sheep. He said they offered discounts on cull animals. His boar had bad ears due to frostbite and he paid around $300.00. Wouldn't mind trying one with my bow. He said it charged him after he shot it the first time. Sounded like a pretty exciting hunt. I tried some boar breakfast sausage, it was very strong flavored.

There's a guy at work who mentioned the other day that he had private ranch contacts in northern Cal where they used to hunt pigs. I think they've become such a problem that getting access is easier than it used to be.

I'll pump him for some more information and get back to you. Sure would be fun, and not that far to go.

Skein and Krue

I know that back in the dark ages there were lots of them in the Salinas area. They were in the lettece fields in the early mornings and late evening. Back then they were hunted for free and you usually got a free lunch or breakfast out of it if you wanted. The amount of damage they caused was amazing.

Krue & Skein-

I no a guy who guides over 250 pig kills in a winter! Awesome guy! Used to work with him during the vineyard development days! He works out of the Mendecino area. Pigs run rampant all over the place down there. There is more public access in that area plus the vineyards! Hope this helps. Just my .02 worth.

Kevin,

BBQ sauce huh!!!

lets get some info. maybe we'll just take a truck and camper and go together (get Skien and whoever).

Wouldn't that be a gas. I just got a new rifle from my sister that I am putting a Redfield 3x -9x on.

Maggot, now that's interesting too! I wonder if there is a "best" time of year for pigin'???

BigShark, Salinas huh?? probably off of the Diablo Ridge. I hear there are pigs closer like in Northern Cali.

Brett, Mendocino sounds like the place. What do you think Skien? Right on the coast, just in from Ukiah. Is this guy a guide?

That's exactly what I'm thinking about, Kruechief. Maybe a four-day weekend. A day both ways, with a couple days hunting. But I've gotta confess - I don't know anything about taking care of one after the shot. We'll need some old hands to speak up. How do you take care of one of those bad boys after you've put him down?

....but wouldn't that be a kick!

Here is the ranch in Oregon.
http://www.adventuresinhunting.com/hunt_NAOregon.htm

$500.00 for a feral boar, $800.00 for a Russian boar.
If anyone knows of a place or guide, and what fees are in california, I might be interested in a trip. Have truck and camper, will travel for pork  . I'm going to check out the link above and see if they have any specials on "culls" running.

Did somebody say pigs? There are some feral swine here in Oregon. Some on the Klamath River around Keno, some around Antelope and some around Spray. Problem is they are on private property and the landowners aren't asking for the public to help them eliminate them. There is a list of over 600 names at the Department of Ag of hunters who want to help. If you know someone they may let you on if isn't too muddy. There have been some on the Deschutes forest off and on above Post and near Metolious but no recent diggings. The ones near Spray are near the road that goes to Waterman flat are/Parrish Creek. I can assure you most landowners hate having them around due to damage.

They are "predators" by definition and can be shot on sight like coyotes, squirels, nutria and such. No license or tag required. License required on public land. Because they are predators the gobernment trappers also get in the act of controlling them for landowners.

Don't know how they taste but I saw the Big Hog in the back of a pickup a few years ago from Washington. Seems like he said it was near 1000 pounds. These aren't near that big - 350 is real big.

I wanna hunt a boar. Think I'll use my pistol, the Thompson contender with the 35 rem barrel, think that will work?
So is there any places in Washington that I can hunt boars? Or am I gonna have to go down to Oregon to hunt them?
How much is it gonna cost me to hunt boars?
Are wild boar any good eating?

So, I wanna get in on a hunt. I got guns, ammo, and money. Thats about all. Need more info.

We have hunted them several times in CA. Rates run from $300 to about $500. Some great hunts, do a search around King city. I have wack them with everything from a 30/06 to a .416, .375 is my favorite. If you want a big one the meat may not be what your after.

Mono,

King City, that's getting pretty far south. But... if that's the area. it seems like the Diablo Ridge is a holding area for them pigs.

Hunting pigs is a blast. I did most of my hunting around Colinga Ca.. Pigs are every where. I had a run in with that same guy at the show three years ago when I asked him what he fed that pig. He didn't like the idea that I was calling that a pen raised pig. I have seen alot of wild hogs and the biggest wild pig I ever saw brought into camp was not quite 400 pounds. The clincher for me was when a few of my friends told me about a trip they took where the pigs were all over the ranch and the had to chase them just so they were not to close to shoot.

I used to hunt them quite a bit and had reasonable success. I don't know if it is legal or not here, but we used to bait an area to find them. I have done most of my hunting at night, but have taken a few during the day. It is definitely a lot of fun hunting them, more exciting and challenging at night. As far as the time of year to hunt them . In the south we hunted them in fall, winter and spring. In the summers they had worms, although it may be cool enough here to be different. The largest one I ever saw weighed in at 425#s.

We baited them with corn and some stuff called Hog Wild. The Hog Wild stuff was berry scented and really brought them in. Here is a site to order http://www.flemingoutdoors.com/catal...nt_1502602.htm

If you need more info. let me know. I have also heard of some over near Madras.

Krue and Skein-

I am telling you the Napa Valley, Mendacino, Ukiah is the place. Less populated, more access and probably more willing land owners. Think about all those delicate vineyards! Salinas is nice but its traffic no matter how you want to get there.

I will jump in on this thing.

As far as eating, I can attest the ones in the fall that have been eating acorns aren't to great.

The ones that have been in barley in early summer were VERY good eating. Esp if you took one around 200# or smaller.

I won a hunt while at a shooting tournament in CA about 16 yrs ago.

Good pig. Not much of a thrill to hunt IMO.

If there were some in Oregon, I'd definitely spend time huntin them in spring and summer.

Good luck guys, let us know how you do.

Skein,

I am not sure about Oregon, but growing up in Texas, feral hogs and javelina were not high on the ranchers popularity list. It seemed like just about any land owner that was not
opposed to hunting in general and judged you to be a responsible person would allow you to hunt them.

We used to bow hunt Javelina's out of windmills. I have never shot a big feral pig, but I did help load one...a big, stinking one. That pretty much made up my mind about shooting one. I have heard that only the small ones are worth eating. I suppose if you were making sausage or the like one of those big old stinkers might be ok.

The people that I have talked with about hunting them claimed they were more sport than your average white tail.

Have fun, and think of me when you are straining to get that big, old, fat , stinkin' pig into your truck.

Skein & Krue

I can't be of any real help for the present day but back then the farmer(lettece grower) would take care of the pig for you. They dipped them head first in a 50 gallon drum of hot water. You could put your finger in the water very quickly and the temperature was perfect if you could do it twice but not a third time. They must have had the pig in the water for 8 to 10 minutes then they pull them back out with a block and tackle. They used two cup like things about the size of a grapefruit cut in half. They scraped the pig of all its hair. Then cut it in quarters and put it in the trunk of your car and told you to go get ice on it. I have no idea how you would go about skinning one. I asked why they couldn't skin it like a deer. They just laughed and said I should try that some time and I would know.

I would have to agree with bigshark. When domestic hogs are purchased whole or quartered the skin is still attached. I've also heard the older the boar the tougher the "shield" gets. I will check into it for you guys.

I hear that the WA Penninsula has several.

As far as time line, late spring sounds like the best time to get out there.

I am up for a road trip out there. Add my name to the group. If I'm not mistaken, in the my stack of harvesting books is at least one with a photo essay on field dressing boar.

Monoman,

They are a blast. It is kinda crazy hunting though. Mucho important to achieve a clean kill or the rest of his buddies will go hog wild attacking him. (not that achieving a clean kill isn't always important)

If you are down in that part of the country, just look for ranchers that do weekend lease hunts. Most of these guys have heated deer stands and electric feeders for their high dollar hunters. These little piggies wreak havoc on their feeders and are usually more than glad to let somebody target them.

Finally, a discussion on pig hunting..
I have hunted pigs 3 times in my life. Everytime we used the same guide. Two of the experiences were very exciting and I would be willing to tell the stories to anyone and in fact when I have time, I will post it. All three times I shot a hog and a trophy the last time. I have him mounted in my office. My family has used the same guide for I believe 12 or 13 hunts total. Every hunt, every person has shot a hog. 100% success... The hunts were not release hunts, they were both spot and stalk and dog hunting.. As far as eating, amazing except the bigger boars have a BO like odor when you cook certain parts of them.
The guides name is Tom Willoughby, and he is out of King City. If anyone wants his name and number, email me..
As far as skinning them, also easy. I have footage of the cleaning of the last two we shot from gutting to skinning and caping... Just like a deer when they're hanging but you can use force and pull the skin away easier than a deer or elk..

Anyone email me if you want to put together a hunt or share info on locations. I have been researching hunting them in Oregon for three years and I am on the dept of ag's list and have been for at least two years now, but no calls. The landowners want the pigs gone, but they don't want their gates left open and hunters to not take care of their property. If anyone has names or owners of any land that holds pigs, I would be willing to call them and talk to them. I feel I would probably be able to convince them to let me hunt and others....

Monoman-

When did Javleina get introduced in the Clear Lake area? I was under the impression that those kinds of pigs only lived in AZ, NM, and Texas? Please let me know.

I ahve also hunted with Tom out of king city. I had a great hunt as well. It was spot and stalk hunt for archery nad I shot a nice boar with 4 inch tusk at 13 yards,. Very exciting.
