Favorite boat rod holder????
OK all you boat people! What is the make of your favorite rod holder and how does it fasten to your boat? A friend is curious as to what kind to check out for his boat. All info mucho appreciated. Thanx ahead of time. Ff

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
I like the Scotty's. They are similar to the Fish-On rod holders, but they are stronger. The fish-ons work great at first, but the cam always seems to slip on older ones, so your rod is suddenly pointing at the water when you get a hit.

1.5" steel pipe, welded to my rail and painted. $4 for the steel and $4 for the paint = 8 rod holders

I went from Fish On holders to Scotty's mounted on Motion Marine sliding brackets. I will never be going back to Fish On's.

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
I have a set of four Scotty's that I use for my halibut poles. The little plastic mounting posts wear out over time, but they are really nice rod holders.
I also have a set of 5 hinged Tite-Loc rod holders that I use for trolling. They are AWESOME!!! I also have a pair of Tite-Locs on each side of my cabin for my gaff, net, harpoon, etc. The Tite-Locs are a great product.

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
I'm another Scotty fan. They're great for Salmon, and if you go after the big sturgeon, you can switch-out to the larger Scotty's metal version which takes a bigger rod (and slides out easier)

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
You really should give FOLBEs a serious look! They are the easiest-to-get-your-rod-out-of holder you will find. If you've ever fought the fish AND the rod holder trying to get the rod out, you'll love the straight up lift. The mounting holes in the side-mount base match up with FOs and Scottys. The holder locks in to the base so there's no slipping out and turning toward the fish. I'll probably never go back to anythng else. (no, I'm not on the payroll, just convinced I've finally found the rod holder I can stay with)

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
Another vote for Folbes. I just picked four of them up last week based on comments from this board (I've been a lifelong Fish-On user) and they are very solid. I like the way the rod releases from the holder-- I might even be able to use a rod holder while bobber fishing now.
My only complaint is that they're not as quick and easy to adjust for elevation and angle. Not difficult, just not instant like the Fish-On. On the other hand, once you adjust them they stay that way. I also like the way they extend a little higher above the gunwale, so you can point the rod tips down slightly toward the water when flatlining (and not fear for the rod coming out of the holder).

I to will give my vote to the new folbe rod holders picked them up and can say they are far superior to any other rod holder I have ever used.

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
I looked at the Folbe's online and, frankly, there is no way that I would trust a tuna rig to that rod holder.
To avoid confusion on the Scotty's there are two. This one, which is similar to the Fish-on holders but has a stainless insert inside the plastic, not all plastic like F-o.
Then there are THESE Scotty's. The fingers are stainless and the front holder is large enough for big foregrips. With this one, all you do is reef up om the foregrip and lift the rod out of the holder. The rear portion that goes over the rod rotates back with the rod.
This is the one to use on the ocean and for any fishing where strength may be a factor. Second choice is the welded pipe. Just my $.02.

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
Folbe all the way.
They do hold up for Tuna! I have put three trips on them without loosing anything.... Yet
They also hold up when you have a good Halibut cranked up about halfway from the depths and you have to put your rod back in there for a few minutes cause your 11 year old daughter is yelling fish on and you have to go help her
Fish on are junk in my opinion. Scotty's are great, but I do love the Folbe

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
Scotty's are great have them on my boat nd love them. The folbe's look like they are a great product but haven't used them yet. The fish-on ones are junk imho. Have used them on my neighbor's dory fishing P.C. they kept popping down, almost lost my rod a couple of times trolling.

Re: Favorite boat rod holder????
Had some frustrating days out b-10 area with the fish-ons...had to cut some hook shanks and use as "brace" so they didn't slam down w/ heavy current or bites. Thought they were wore out after many oversize strugs etc. so we bought new fish-ons but they were just as bad down at b-10. Had to really crank them down. Now we have scotty's. Seem great. Haven't taken them trolling yet in heavy water though.
