Tuna Thoughts
It will be interesting to see what happens with the warm water pools in the next day or two when that north wind starts blowing (current forecast 25 to 30 knots today and 20 to 25 tomorrow). But, at least, Friday and Saturday will be play days for all those who can get away (2 and 4 and 2 and 3). On the most recent Coastwatch (7/26/05 7:08 UTC), there is still some warm water northwest of Depoe and southwest of the Columbia and some directly west of Winchester, but that may be the water to watch as the wind blows.
What do you guys think will be the areas to explore for tuna on Friday/Saturday or do you think it is too early to make a call and that we will have to wait until Thursday to see what the wind has created? At least there is always halibut this weekend and maybe some salmon if the warm water blows away. I'd appreciate any thoughts from the salty ones. Thanks.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
The wind has already done it's thing to the warm water we had in close. Now it is more typical for this time of year. The answer to your question is "wherever there is a good edge"; that is, a sharp (1.0 to 1.5 deg) change starting at 58 or above. And a color change from clear green to blue doesn't hurt either, esp. if it lines up with the temp break.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
check this out:
zoom in
Where it goes from green to yellow to orange.....you want these to be as narrow as possible, so the transition in the 57 - 61 range is as short as possible. Then when you actually get to the area, slow down a bit so you can see how fast the temp is changing for each mile.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Thanks Mark, I guess we will just have to see what this week's wind does to what is left of the warm water. I'll keep an eye on those fast-changing temperature gradations.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
The area between 45N and 126/25 looks fishy..
Maybe some exotics in that plume of warm water...

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Check out the Coastwatch for 7/27/05 at 2100 UTC with the same lat/long/zoom factors compared to the one posted for 7/27/05 at 700 UTC. Look at that warm water headed west. If the distance between 124 and 125 is about 45 miles, the warm water moved about 15 miles west in the 14 hours between 700 and 2100 UTC. We'll see where it is for the weekend.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Yea it definitely edged out a little. Still not bad from Depoe. BTW it's 42 miles per degree west up here, or 0.7 NM per minute.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Popeye, I know you got some range on that nice vessel of yours, but 295 miles out seems extreme.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
The SST freeveiw (7-26 11:44PM) is all I have to look at.
Has the water moved out since then?

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Thanks Bruce!
Still haven't decided whether I'm camping this weekend or driving back and forth.
I sleep better at home and remain soberer!
If I stay over I'll come by for a visit.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Popeye is right, there's some water a little closer than 45/125, but there's not much. Looks like the water at the 61 spot is now in the high 50's. Mark Mc's "piggy spot" and Pilar's "Hump 3" look to be fishable, but they are right on the line. Both are in the 124 45.--- to 124 50.--- range. The water from 124.50 out to 125 looks good also.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Maybe, but check out the 7/28 6:21 UTC (7/27---11:21 p.m. PDT) Coastwatch. All that warm water in the vicinity of 125/45 has gone bye-bye. I could be interpreting the Coastwatch chart wrong, but it sure looks like it is a lot different from the last Terrafin shot (7/27 at 5:46 p.m. PDT or thereabouts). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Tuna Thoughts
Here is the Coastwatch link: http://coastwatch.pfel.noaa.gov/cwbrowse...209_0621_n17_wn
but, you might want to take a look at another post I started here which goes by : Calling MarkMc for Coastwatch Interpretation. He gives a very plausible explanation for the apparent cool down of the waters, so it might not be as bad as it looks. Good luck to all of us.
