Default Dogs and calls........

Yup! You guessed it, another dog question. Must be that time of year? My 8 mo Chessie LOVES duck/goose calls, problem is, she likes to howl along...... How do I get her to quit howling at the calls? I'm at a loss.

All in all, she's comming along. Albeit slowly (mostly my fault). I need to start her into field training. Problem is, she is still slow on "come" yet. Kinda scares me to put her in the field. She comes MOST of the time, but if her nose gets invloved, all bets are off. She's birdy as heck (regularly tries to catch the songbirds at the feeder!) Will hold and fetch to hand, is starting to grasp "heal". SHOULD be able to hunt the youth hunt for her first, along with my boy's first hunt....

Thanks in advance for your .02

Eric

I'm guessing you don't use an e-collar as part of your training / control protocol. My advice (the short version) is to educate yourself to the benefits of kind use of the e-collar, purchase one and use it. A couple of light nicks during the howling will fix pup right up. . .and I've not met a pup yet who couldn't be turned back to you with a little gentle e-stimulus.

My $.02. . .FWIW.

Checkcord, checkcord, checkcord. COME isn't an option. Once she is 100% on the checkcord you can run vary using it. Checkcord, checkcord.

As for the howling. I'm betting that in the beginning you and others thought it was a hoot and you guys got your calls out and played in a band together??? My big dog does it to the harmonica. So, if you did this, you now need to teach her it's not a cool thing. Blow the call, tell her NO, QUIET, HUSH, whatever you say when she's barking and you don't want her to. Go through this several times a day and after a while she'll learn. Be consistent and patient.
