Hello all! As is the tradition, I have a story for you.
A couple years ago I took my wife on a late spring fishing trip to Central Oregon. We were staying at Twin Lakes Resort. I got my wife out of bed at 5:30 for a drive up to Paulina Lake. When we got there, ice had formed in the shallow edges of the lake and the temperature must have been in the 20's but a beautiful clear morning. My wife commented that it was FREEZING! I said, "Yes dear, isn't it a beautiful morning!" I launched the boat and motored over to the Resort. I went into the store to buy something and when I came out my wife was screaming an flailing her arms. The boat was sinking!
It turns out I forgot to put the drain plug in. I did not notice right away because there was water in the boat from our trip to Wickiup the day before. The water had frozen in the drain hole on the drive up and melted as the boat sat in the water. I quickly jumped in, motored back to the launch, backed my trailer in, and attached the boat. The problem was the launch was a frozen sheet of ice from when I pulled the trailer out the first time. I had to wait on the ramp, with the boat half in the water for another vehicle to come and help tow me out.
Afterwards, my wife was sure that we were heading back to our warm cabin. I smiled and said, "What a great adventure to get our blood pumping! Now lets launch the boat again and start fishing!" We caught some browns and kokanee that morning. My wife only remembers "the cold and the disaster". I don't know what she was complaining about; I think the temperature made it up to 40 degrees and we caught fish! To this day, she reminds me of the "incident" and will not accompany me unless the temperature is at least 60 degrees.
