Cool Elk Wallow Pics
My buddy sent me these pictures of a bull they found last weekend hiking in Montana. He recently moved up there and has been scouting around for next year. He found something definitely interesting. The depth of the wallow is shown by the stick. He's six feet tall.
Definitely a dandy bull.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
OK, That does it,
I'm not going to take off my clothes and roll around in another elk wallow without a PFD and life guard.
Thanks for the pics. Nature is unforgiving.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
What happened to him? Did he get stuck in there because of the steep sides. What a bummer that bull has some great genetics by the lookes of 'em.
Hell of a deep wallow though--I think the deepest I have ever seen is about 2-3 feet!
Kinda gets the blood pumpin though

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but that photo has been around for a couple of years. Supposedly Colorado. Search "Wallow of Death" on Google for further info.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Ras in right, those pics have been on all the hunting websites. I can't remember how many times I've had it e-mailed to me.
Look at the green grass, and the summer attire those guys are wearing, definately not January in Montana!

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Actually sorry to burst your bubble but he's the one in the middle of the first picture. He's not B.S. ing me. I've hunted with him for 8 years now. Pretty amazing people can pic apart photo's and what not from not being there. I have the pics of them dragging the bull out of the mud. Nothing short of amazing. Didn't know there were so many experts out there.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Whether it's tailchasers friend or not, I'd hope that someone was kind enough to throw some sticks, logs, etc. into the hole so that another animal wouldn't suffer like that elk surely did. That really makes me feel horrible thinking of an elk dying because he couldn't get out of a hole - kind of like the picture of the elk 12 miles offshore that was posted here last summer.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
I did the google search and did find some websites where these exact photos had been posted several months ago - either tailchaser got his dates messed up, or he's (or his buddy) is full of it.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
As odd as this may seem, it is not as rare as you would think. Several years ago I found a large bull elk which had become stuck in a skunk cabbage bog and died. It was buried up to it's belly with the legs all tangled below. By the looks of things it had struggled mightily and had probably died of heat exhaustion and stress. What a way to go.

Here's a webpage with the story. If you click on The Death Wallow, it will take you to the photos.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Sorry, I'm not a computer expert either! Looks like I left out a "n" out of westernhunter. I'll try it again.
http://www.westernhunter.com/Pages/V...allowinfo.html
These photos started showing up on Bowsite.com in the fall of 2001. It says the wallow was in Colorado.
I'm may not be an expert, but I've been playing in the woods since I could walk, and have been working in the woods for 30 years. I can tell the difference between September and January!
I'm not disputing anything you say tailchaser, but these photos HAVE been around.
Peace, sliverpicker

If you have access to google, do like Killertraylor says and type in "death wallow".

TC;
Not picking apart the photo, just your opening statement. I knew you would probably be a little bent by my post; I was just trying to clarify things. That's what experts do.
Thanks for the support from your end Sliverpicker.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
The one thing he didn't tell me was the dates they found it. He sent them to me this weekend.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
From the westernhunter.com website: "David Dole of New York was archery hunting in Colorado this past season when he came upon the elk's antlers sticking out of the wallow. After he returned home he was on a bowhunting chat forum and discribed what he had found. John Legnard (pictured with the measuring pole) from Colorado saw David's messages and knew the area. Via e-mail David sent John the directions and John went to the location with some friends and found the elk. John and his friends took pictures and pulled the elk from the wallow."
So, Tailchaser, are we supposed to believe your story? I'm sorry, I saw this thing a long time ago and, while I'm not even certain the above story is true, I can't buy yours either. Maybe you need to send us a separate photo of the guy who is your buddy!
As far as keeping other elk out of it, the best thing for that would have been to have left that one in there!

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Was it a wallow or a trench snare. Looks really suspicious  ...how did an elk manage to create such a DEEP pit

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Couldn't tell ya, I definitely took my lumps on this one, and I grilled my buddy last night on the phone about it. Apparently, the guy with the stick in his hand posted them last year sometime and he just now got around to sending them my way. I misinterpreted some of his email also. Anyhoo, there wasn't any snare of anytype they found. I've seen springs that were pretty deep from soft mud underneath. I think just about everyone has had the experience with sinking in the mud and having it suck to our legs to make it pretty hard to get out. Imagine it up to your neck. Pretty tough to get out, especially when all your legs are below you. Who really knows but a couple of the pics he sent shows the bulls head underwater and just the horns sticking out. Hard to tell, lots of things could be at fault.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
What!? The guy with the stick in his hand posted them sometime last year  Above, you said that the guy in the middle of the first picture was your buddy (he's the same guy holding the stick...). I'm really confused now, but I forgive your mistake - I'm sure you've grieved enough over this tailchaser! I think guys gave you such a hard time because you tried to defend yourself without knowing all the facts - that's always hard. Thanks for sharing the pics with us though - I had never seen them.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
OOps, my bad once again, my buddy is holding the stick, they guy at the right is my nemesis. He posted the pics before. Typed without looking at the pics once again. Can someone just erase this thing!!! I'm starting to confuse myself.

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Jim,
You're really taking a beating in this thread. Who cares when the pics were taken. It's very interesting and something that probably happens in the wild but isn't seen too often. Lets get on to more interesting topics like dead animals!

Re: Cool Elk Wallow Pics
Thanks Ryan, the welts are finally disappearing from when I threw it on here. If you want though I have some pics of my dead bull on another thread from BOE. I'll have to send you some other pics from this last year. Pretty wild one, got a bear, antelope, elk, and one of my two deer tags. Should have killed two bucks this year but my last weekend got s*******.
