Default 65% let off

I bought my 60 lb draw bow in Colorado with 85% let off. It appears it is illegal to use in Oregon. I would never think of doing anything illegal, but what's the deal with this 65% law. I only ask because it seems Oregon, and I heard maybe 1 other state, have this regulation. Do I have to buy a new bow just to hunt in Oregon? I'm an archery novice, thought maybe some of you pro's could shed some light on this.

Washington, and I believe Idaho, have the same rule.

Wasn't there some recent discussion here that the ODF&W was looking at dropping this?

Yes legally, your bow can have no more than 65% let off. It is there at the bottom of page 17 in the '05 regs.

Ore and wash. are looking to change this law due to lack of bows made under 65% anymore. Pope &Young also are changing the 65% law. So you know it will change. now how many people are capable of accuratly measuring your bow in the field well enough to hold up in court?

You might be able to reduce the let off to 65%. I'd take it to a bow shop and check it out. Good luck. Kris.

Its illegal, but I have yet to be checked by an officer with a scale. I think it will only become an issue if you harvest a record book animal and what to submit it.

The law states that 65% as measured by AMO standards. Now AMO standards are for a dynamic measurement. This means that the measurement must be taken while the string is moving rearward at the exact instant before full draw when the string stops. Once the string stops the measurement is no longer dynamic (moving) and static hirustics (spelling?) make a measurement invalid, the measured value will be more than the actual AMO letoff. A bow measured by AMO standards at 65% will actually have around 70% let off when measured at static full draw. Meaning that if a game officer puts a scale on your bow in the field his measurement will be invalid. In order to perform a true AMO dynamic measurement the officer would need a machine to draw your bow with a force meter hooked up to a computer with a chart or graph plotter to get the true letoff. Since most bow manufactures don't use the AMO method for stated let off most 70-75% let off bows will actually be legal. If I ever go to court for this it will be fun to give the officer and judge a lesson in physics.
